A timeless story turned classic from 1988 starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey is being brought back to life in 2017. The 2017 revival set to air on Lifetime on January 21, at 8/7c stars Idina Menzel (as CC Bloom) and Nia Long (as Hilary Whitney). Fans are hoping that this modern day revival is everything they could ever wish for and more, many are hoping that Menzel and Long can portray the story that the originals once told all those years ago. Here are five reasons why Lifetime is our hero.
Idina Menzel as CC Bloom
Idina is most recently famous for her role as Elsa in the Disney phenomenon Frozen but to many she is so much more than that; she’s Maureen, she’s Elphaba, she’s Elizabeth. The role of CC Bloom could not have come at a better time for Menzel. CC Bloom is one of the most iconic roles from a classic film and what more could fans ask for when Idina was announced to play her? The woman herself is a phenomenon, and a “blazing supernova” in the words of The Hollywood Reporter. The role of CC is in good hands.
Bette gave her blessing
Menzel opened up in an interview about how terrified she was to take on the role of CC Bloom due to the fact that it was played previously by Bette Midler (which meant Idina had some pretty big shoes to fill). But have no fear, the Divine Miss. M herself put all her faith in Menzel on August 2, 2016 when she tweeted, "Can’t wait to see Idina Menzel as CC in Lifetime’s “Beaches!” DON’T
TELL ME THE ENDING!"
The story of a timeless friendship
There aren’t many movies out there that can tell a story the way that Beaches does. One of two girls who meet while on vacation with their families and then manage to stay in touch no matter what goes on in their lives. They’re from two different backgrounds and yet they’re still completely inseparable and would drop everything to be with the other at any given point.
Wind Beneath My Wings
This song is so timeless and holds a special place in a lot of people’s hearts, and while some may never be able to accept someone other than Bette Midler singing it, Idina (as with many other songs she’s covered in her career), put her own twist on it.
The Glory of Love
Come on. You gotta give a little, take a little… and listen to Idina sing this song, a little (or a lot I won’t judge you, I have it on repeat too).
