College is confusing enough.
Starting out as a freshman in college there are a million and one things that you have to be stressed or confused about. Where am I going to attend? Am I going to live there? Who will my roommate be? What will I study? Will I fit in? There are tons of questions that keep you up at night wondering. Some students go into their first college experiences knowing exactly what they want to major in, and exactly what they want to do with the rest of their lives, which makes situations such as choosing your courses much easier because you have a sense of direction. Most students however, have no idea. Some make a random decisions and end up changing their minds, while some go in as "Undeclared". Let me tell you, there is nothing wrong with any of these educational directions.
Being an undeclared major, you get a lot of heat from elders. Your parents, and family may be concerned that not knowing what you're going to be majoring in may set you back. But that's really not the case. Not choosing a major if you aren't positive is actually more beneficial to you. Here is why:
It allows you to get all your prerequisite classes out of the way so that when you have finally decided on your major, you can jump right into classes that focus towards your major. This will make it so you can really see and learn about your major and most cases this makes the classes much more interesting and easier to sit through.
It allows you to explore different choices for majors. It gives you ample time to research and look into interests of yours and find what might be the best suit for you. It gives time to use trial and error for things you may want a possible career doing. It also allows you to talk to different advisers and counselors, and even fellow students about different majors and paths you can take through certain majors.
It gives you room to grow within yourself. Exploring different career paths and interests of yours really helps to find out things you may not have known about yourself. You may find new interests you never knew you had, and you could even find the job of your dreams. All of the freedom you have within being an undeclared major allows you to find and grow within yourself.
So, undeclared majors, stop your stressing! You have the rest of your life to know what you are going to do. Use your first months or even first year of college exploring yourself, building relationships, and studying hard in your required courses. Take the time you need to make the right decision about your chosen major so you don't have to go through the trouble of changing majors and classes later on throughout your educational career. Don't let anyone tell you that you're making the wrong decision. Do what is best for you!
