On the Facebook group “UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens” recently, a young Cal student had uploaded a meme that has grown popular within the UC Berkeley community. Behold: an analogy between the Hogwarts houses and the various majors offered by the university.
Of course, there are many more majors provided by UC Berkeley, but if you know your House but are completely undecided on what to do with your life, then where do you really belong? Let the Sorting Hat figure out your passion.
Gryffindor
Pre-med? Makes sense. It takes a strong, brave soul to survive the all-nighters fueled by cup upon cup of coffee. Chances are that a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology or Integrative Biology would sound the most appealing for that reason (but you don’t necessarily have to major in something biology-related in order to apply to medical school). For someone who takes pride on loyalty, passion, and bravery, however, a pre-law career doesn’t sound too bad. You could study your favorite figures through a History major, or you could expand your leadership skills by learning the inner workings of the government with a Legal Studies or Political Science major.
Hufflepuff
Of course, any major in the College of Natural Resources or the College of Environmental Design would apply to Hufflepuff. But, Hufflepuffs are also known for their kindness and tolerance, so why not major in something centered around people and their fight for recognition? Gender and women’s studies, African-American studies, Asian-American and Asian diaspora studies, Chicano studies, or disability studies would be perfect fits in this case. An education or nursing career maybe? And, if you ever need to pick up a minor, the global poverty and practice department is right there for you.
Ravenclaw
They say that EECS is indicative of the intelligent Ravenclaw, mostly because it’s ridiculously hard to get into. However, the College of Engineering’s rumored elitist nature can also be a turnoff for many Ravenclaws, and quite a few Ravenclaws value learning for learning’s sake rather than its application. Still, EECS and the other engineering departments are a valid fit with the Ravenclaw’s personality. Other STEM majors include astrophysics and computer science (through Letters and Science). On the side of the humanities, we have the English, philosophy, music/theater, film, and art majors -- an ode to the Ravenclaw’s creativity. Any department related to literature, linguistics, cognitive science, or cultural and language studies (i.e. Scandinavian, Near Eastern Studies, etc.) can enrich the learning experience of a Ravenclaw.
Slytherin
Pre-Haas. Definitely pre-Haas, and I don’t think I really need to explain why. But, if you’re not interested in business administration, a general economics degree would suffice. Any major in the College of Engineering, as well as computer science, would allow you to succeed. The other pre-professional options (i.e. pre-med, pre-law, etc.) are viable, thanks to the Slytherin’s signature ambition and dedication. The College of Chemistry majors are also perfect for Slytherins who love a challenge, especially for those who desire a Nobel Prize in the future.
