CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Both the University and the town of Chapel Hill are operating under emergency conditions Friday due to a water shortage.
According to an alert sent out by Alert Carolina around 12:15 p.m., the campus water supplier, Orange Water and Sewer Authority, warned that the water supply was critically low.
Students were instructed not to drink or use water on campus until further notice.
At 1:09 p.m., Alert Carolina announced the University was immediately canceling classes because of fire safety concerns.
The University is currently operating under Condition 3, which means all non-mandatory operations are temporarily suspended -- offices and facilities are closed and classes are canceled for the rest of the day.
Ram's Head Dining Hall is currently operating under normal conditions. Campus residence hall officials advise that students leave campus for the weekend if possible.
Updates on the water crisis can be found on the official OWASA website.
