"What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies." -Aristotle
Middle school is always rough. You start puberty, school seems overwhelming, and there is always drama. Now add your parents getting divorced. Your world seems upside down.
That's where it starts.
We met in middle school. She was a new transfer, and she shadowed me in school. We have been inseparable ever since.
Through our family issues, through me switching schools, to both of us attending different colleges, we have been a constant. Through all of life’s inconsistencies, we have been constant.
Looking back, I can see key moments that hinted at us being “soulmates”.
One day after school, I received a call from someone that had been ignoring me, to put it lightly. This phone call was emotional as you can image. I was shocked to hear the person’s voice. I was shocked that the person was reaching out to me. I was shocked that just one word from my dad could make me cry.
As I began to cry, I looked up to see her crying. “Why are you crying?” I asked. “Because you are crying.” My emotions were mirrored in her. She was crying as my tears were falling.
Having someone that cries due to your heartache is something that can’t be described. It just creates a bond that is unspeakable.
Carowinds worship day is another memory that brings back chills. I remember worshiping with her by my side. We sang out with everyone there in one voice. The atmosphere was filled with God’s presence. In the song, the was a line about grace being like rain. As everyone sang out in one accord, it began to downpour. In that moment, I knew God had blessed me with her in my life.
Another mark in our friendship was the day that death crept in. Having an immediate family member pass into the next life is never easy, especially if the death was sudden and unknown until the body was found.
She was there. She was there to cradle me in her arms and catch my tears.
Friends may come and go, but there is usually that one that never leaves your side. You both grow and change, move to different places, and experience different things, but, throughout all the change, your friendship is unbroken.
