Most people don't consider taking a Women and Gender Studies Class, mostly due to a lack of interest or having incorrect impressions about what it entails. I strongly believe everyone should take a course in Women and Gender Studies to become familiar with its general concepts. I took 101 Introduction to Women and Gender Studies my first semester of college and felt extremely compelled by this course as it made me learn about about myself and helped me become a better person all around.
It's extremely relevant & you'll realize things you hadn't before
"It's 2016, men and women have equal rights. Sexism is a thing of the past." Think again. Women are still getting paid less and everyday there seems to be a new article published about girls being sent home because of some dress code violation. To believe sexism no longer exists is actually the theory Enlightened Sexism. (The media tricks people into believing gender equality has been achieved).
You'll comprehend the true goal and meaning of feminism
I can't stress this enough: Feminism is not just for women and it's not putting women above men!!! It is for everyone. Feminism is social, political, and economic equality for all genders. Feminism is not bad or scary. Feminism only has a negative connotation because the patriarchy wants it that way. Also, the study of feminism is much more interesting then you'd think. There is many kinds of feminism, such as Intersectional Feminism. I identity as an intersectional feminist because it combines advocacy for all forms of oppression that one can face.
You'll learn different perspectives
Before taking this class, I didn't know the difference between gender and sex. I was blindsided about the oppression domestic workers face and how devastating immigration is for many families. Whether you identity as a feminist or not, you can benefit from taking a Women and Gender Studies class by learning new perspectives and terms.
Whatever your opinions are, you will be able to strengthen them
You learn such variety of topics and your viewpoints will become much stronger sense you will being constantly debating them. Because of this class, I have become such a stronger debater/public speaker and know a lot facts to back myself up. I love talking about gender politics!
Learn how the patriarchy affects not only women, but also men
The patriarchy (the system in society that believes men are superior to women) creates a binary relationship between men and women by placing them into the categories of masculine and feminine. In Women and Gender Studies, you'll learn about how the patriarchy limits men by shaming them for showing emotion, being stay-at- home parents, and not being the bread winner in their families, which is not okay!
Learn about forgotten figures in history
Ever hear of Shirley Chisholm or Ella Baker? Unfortunately, probably not. Many hardworking role models have been left out of standard history for defying the mainstream. Luckily, in a Women and Gender Studies class you'll learn about prominent figures in history from around the world that are extremely inspiring.
Learning the facts will inspire you to spark change
Dr. Suess said, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Learning about different kinds of injustice can motivate you look for ways to better society. You can use your knowledge from this class and make sure people around you are being treated fairly. After all, we are all created equally. Gandhi said it best with, "Be the change that you wish to see in the world."
