On February 14, 2018, there was another school shooting resulting in horrific tragedy.
This shooting was unlike any we have seen before. Living in the digital age, technology continues to grow and intertwine with every aspect of everyday life. When the students of Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida heard gunshots, students immediately turned to there phone to record what was happening.
With that said, footage is now being shown around the world and gives many people a chance to empathize with these students in a way unlike before.
Besides this, many believe that this shooting was extremely preventable, as the shooter had been known and reported to possesses both weapons and the intent to use them. All of this combined has led to a campaign to increase the gun laws in the United States as well as call an end to mass shootings.
This campaign was fueled by the families of the Parkland shooting's victims but more importantly, the survivors. Using social media, they have gained international support in the fight to end gun violence. In the days following the shooting, we saw interviews, live footage but also say politicians interacting with the public.
President Donald Trump met with the students and families of Parkland, Florida where he was criticized to his face for his lack of actions in fighting for change. This is incredibly unlike Trump, who hates to be criticized, especially in person.
As of right now, the chance for reform seems only slightly possible, something that has seen no progress throughout many many years.
The University of Massachusetts admissions team sent out a tweet on February 22, 2018, which said;
This tweet is changing the admissions process, but also changing how schools interact with social issues. The University of Massachusetts is setting an example of supporting its students and future students to fight for social changes they believe in.
As a student at UMass, I am incredibly proud to be part of a community that encourages such behavior when schools across the nation threaten students with suspension and expulsion for peaceful protesting.
I'm hoping this tweet sparks a movement with colleges around the nation. Many other companies are cutting ties with the NRA to show their support for social change. Altogether, this gives me hope that change and reform are possible. I'm absolutely heartbroken for the many lives lost by gun violence each year. We have the ability to fight for less heartbreak, fewer funerals and less violence.
