20 Fun Mizzou Must-Dos

Mizzou -- a small gem tucked away in the middle of the country. As a school deeply rooted in history, Mizzou prides itself with its rich traditions and classic landmarks. Check out these 20 Mizzou must-dos to accomplish before you graduate:

1. Participate in Tiger Walk.

This tradition symbolizes the beginning of the freshman class’s journey at Mizzou, and is a really fun experience. (Plus, you get free Tiger Stripe ice cream.)

2. Ride the Tiger.

The tiger statue on Traditions Plaza is a key landmark on campus, and in order to call yourself a true tiger, you must “tame” the tiger by sitting on its back. For shorties like me, this one requires a helping hand.

3. Swim in the fountain.

While you’re at it, take a dip in the fountain below the tiger statue to cool off. It’s refreshing and totally legal (maybe).

4. Tailgate hop on game day.

There’s no better season than football season, and Tigers fans go all out to support their team. Decked out in black and gold and sipping on an ice cold drink with friends is the best, and really only way to spend Saturdays at the Zou.

5. Start an M-I-Z chant.

When you make it to the game, it’s time to show your Tigers some love with the traditional chant.

6. Cheer with the Tiger’s Lair or Zou Crew at a sporting event.

It’s really easy to sign up to be a part of this spirited crew. These are the extremely dedicated fans who come early and stay late. It’s a blast to be a part of such a lively group!

7. Go to a free event at the Student Union.

For broke college kids like you and me, nothing is better than free food. Keep an eye out for upcoming events and bring some friends along for a fun time.

8. Shout in Speaker’s Circle.

Whether you’re representing an organization, or you just want to express your passion for something, this sacred circle gives you the space to do just that- go wild.

9. Explore Columbia.

Columbia is full of beautiful outdoor destinations to explore. Take a hike through the MKT or Katy trails, or make a day trip to the Pinnacles or Devil’s Ice Box. Take a walk at Stephen’s Lake Park or rent free bikes from the Student Center to get some exercise with friends. The fall and spring seasons are beautiful in Columbia, so be sure to take full advantage.

10. Support local businesses by eating downtown.

Grab a pizza at Shakespeare’s or Gumby’s. Indulge in late-night appetizers on Monday’s at Flatbranch. Order a sandwich from Pickleman’s, or get comfort food from Shiloh’s or the Heidelberg. Sip on Margs and munch on chips and salsa at La Siesta. The options are endless

11. Rub David R. Francis’s nose before an exam.

This old tradition is a student favorite. The statue’s nose has actually been replaced several times because it’s so popular!

12. Streak the Quad.

Don’t ask, just do.

13. Work out at the Rec Center.

There’s a reason it’s rated the nicest college rec facility in America.

14. Spend an afternoon at the Columns.

The Quad is one of the most beautiful places on campus, and students love to climb up on the columns or spread a blanket in the grass and study or relax with friends. It’s a great way to enjoy the beautiful campus and get outdoors.

15. Kiss the 50 yard line.

This tradition is a favorite of many Tiger fans. Someday, somehow, make your way onto Faurot field and give that line some lovin’.

16. Participate in or watch the Homecoming Parade.

There is nothing like this lively event! It’s so amazing to be a part of, as the entire town and campus community comes together to celebrate our school, which originated the Homecoming tradition many years ago.

17. Get involved.

Whether you go Greek, join an organization related to your major, or a club just for fun, get involved in some way. Try out for a club sports team, volunteer at the Food Bank, dance at MizzouThon, or voice your opinion to the Student Senate. Go and find what you’re passionate about, or try something new. You may be surprised at the opportunities that result as a byproduct of you taking action.

18. Go to a concert at the Blue Note.

This music venue hosts some pretty cool artists, especially in their street concert series. I had the chance to see both Cole Swindell and Chase Rice this year for under $20 each time. These concerts are a blast and very affordable!

19. Attend the Tap Day ceremony.

Tap Day is when exceptional Mizzou students are initiated into secret societies, which is an outstanding honor.

20. Make your mark.

Every day you spend on this campus is a gift and an opportunity for greatness. Make an effort to change the community around you for the better. There’s a reason you’re here; you have something to share with others, and your presence will touch so many people in ways you can’t even imagine yet. Whether big or small, make an effort to connect with someone each day, and take steps toward becoming who you want to be. This is the perfect time and place to mold yourself into the best version of yourself you can possibly be, so don’t waste a single moment, and take advantage of each and every opportunity. You’ll be amazed at how far you can go, Tiger.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
