Why Nebraska Odyssey Is My Little Blessing In Disguise

As I am sitting here in the library after an incredibly long day, I think about all the stuff that I still have to do. I have more than 4 hours worth of homework, and that doesn't even count the studying that I still have to do. But, before I can begin any of that I have to write an article. An article that I know that is due every week, but every week I find myself in the same position. Every now and again I excel when it comes to my to-do list and turn it in early.

As the editor you would think that I would be on top of the game, always turning in my article early and always knowing what to write about. But that is simply not the case. My friends always ask why I keep doing it if I hate it so much. As I approach a year working for The Odyssey, I wanted to reflect on why I have stuck with it for so long. I came up with about three different reasons.

1. Responsibility

Being an editor for The Odyssey is a full time job, I spend hours recruiting, editing, brainstorming, and sending out e-mails. Because I have so much to do I am forced to choose wisely, and find time to accomplish everything I have signed myself up to. This has taught me to be responsible even when I do not want to.

2. Writing Skills

Writing every week has definitely improved my writing. Sometimes my articles are still terrible, but as my dad always says, you miss every shot you don't take.

3. Leadership

As the editor I am in charge of a large group of people. This has taught me how to become not only a better leader, but has improved my ability to discuss things with people. Sometimes I have to be strict with my writers and that can be hard, but it is something that I have had to learn how to do. These are skills that I am grateful to have learned.

So, friends, even though I complain all the time about how much I am not looking forward to the end of the week. Or how I really REALLY don't know what to write about. The Odyssey has been my little blessing in disguise.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
