**The Odyssey does not approve or support harassing residents of Pope Street.**
"Every single day, Every word you say, Every game you play, Every night you stay, I'll be watching you." – Lady on Pope
It might just be because it is wintertime, but there is an interesting fad going around here at the University of Georgia that is on the weirder side of things. Everyone is either a little bit bored because there is no football or they have gone crazy due to the cold weather. Either way, students at UGA are finding a thrill in something that most people would find to be a little bit twisted.
The lady on Pope Street; on the surface she is just your average person who stares at a passerby through her window as that person drives by. But, unlike all those similar to her that came before her, she has captivated a student body. Apparently this is how everything works: First, you call up a friend or two and throw out a crazy idea at them. “Who wants to go for a ride and drive down to Pope Street to see the Lady on Pope Street?” Second, you and your friend get in the car and make that drive. Next, everything that you thought would happen actually happens. Finally, you take to social media as if you were completely surprised that a lady starred at you through her window.
My question for those who have jumped on this unbelievably random act is why would anyone want to spend their nights driving around looking for a lady who will creep you out? I can't say from personally having experienced "The Lady on Pope", but I find the whole thing a bit uncomfortable.
Maybe that’s just it. We are so captivated by the unique. We are so riveted by the unnatural. We are so enthralled by what makes us fear for our lives. This lady, is one of those things that nobody actually wants to see, but she is talked about so often that everybody feels almost obligated to see for themselves. I can't say that I necessarily agree with this phenomenon, one thing is for certain though, this woman clearly should be left alone.
So, what is the story behind the Lady on Pope Street? Well, nobody really knows, and that is what makes it even more interesting. She pops out in the morning, afternoon and evening. It is almost as if she knows exactly when you are going to drive by.
The challenge now is will you be intrigued enough to drive by? There is not much to it. You'll probably be disappointed. There is not much excitement. While this woman is no doubt interesting, Athens should probably just leave her alone.
