The University of Georgia students received a text message from campus officials at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, September 19 regarding a potential threat on campus. A student anonymously posted a YikYak stating, "If you want to live, don't be at the MLC at 12:15."
The building in question, the Miller Learning Center also known as the Student Learning Center, has been evacuated and is currently on lockdown. Firetrucks have been called to the scene. According to one student there was also was an abulance spotted driving down Milledge Avenue towards the building.
"I got to my car and at the intersection of Lumpkin and Baxter the intersection was being controlled by policemen directing traffic away from the building and their were people literally sprinting out of the building from the evacuation," said senior at UGA, Sarah Anne Patton. "I've been sobbing because it was the scariest sight I have ever seen."
The University quickly responded to the threat and contacted students. Most students received a text message from stating, "Threat of violence at MLC. Stay away until further notice." There was also a warning telephone call sent to students addressing the issue.
"I just don't understand, I haven't gotten a text message or a phone call or anything. I had no idea, I had class at the SLC, and I'm just baffled that I could have been walking around there and not known anything," said UGA student, Ryan Casey. "I would like to think its fake, but you gotta assume it's real until its proven fake."
Although the MLC is on lockdown, most professors in classrooms nearby were allegedly unfazed by the threat and continued teaching their classes.
"Its actually comforting how relaxed my teachers were about it, and we were in the building across the street," commented Junior, Gracie Peterson.
Less than two hours after the initial threat was posted on Yik Yak another threat was made.
At 1:15p.m. ET students received another text alert stating,"There is an all clear for the Miller Learning Center. Please resume normal activities."
