UF's New Infinity Hall

UF's New Infinity Hall

If you have spent at least a year in a dorm at UF, you know how you are limited in many things you can do there.  Aside from not being allowed to keep certain items in your room, did you know that students in residence halls are not allowed to start businesses out of their living space? For a university with such a prestigious business college, and dedication to innovation, that may seem odd. But that's about to change.

A new residence hall, dubbed, "The Infinity Hall," is currently being developed by the University to serve as a place to live for students looking to get a jump start on the real world and innovate right from their on-campus housing. The building will include a 3-D printer, offices, collaboration lounges and spaces dedicated to design. Twenty percent of the building space will be designed for spaces to perfect students' business acumen, therefore not generating any revenue -- a statistic unheard of in the world of cramped UF dorm buildings.

The Infinity Hall will be a part of the new Innovation Square currently being developed two blocks east of campus, adjacent to the Innovation Hub constructed in 2012.  The area serves as a link between UF and the Innovation Academy, and encourages entrepreneurship aspirations for students at UF. Although associated with the Innovation Academy, Infinity Hall will not be limited only to IA students; anyone looking to get a head start in the business world will be considered for residency. It is will also be the last project to start under Bernie Machen's term as UF president.

"This sounds like it offers a good opportunity," says Barbara Atencio, a student pursuing her degree in business administration.  "Nowadays, a college degree isn't enough for a career; you have to get the ball rolling early and get involved before graduation, and this sounds like a good way to make your resume stand out."

Nour Elkhatib, a senior living off campus, also has an opinion on the new Infinity Hall. "I think this is a great idea by UF," he said. "If they had something like this in my first year, I probably would have considered living on campus, rather than off campus my whole time here."

Considering that the Infinity Hall will offer amenities that some apartments don't even have -- the office in my apartment isn't very conducive to doing serious business in -- I would imagine Nour's sentiment is shared by many.

Although no final date has been set for the residence hall's completion, construction on the whole Innovation Square area has already begun. It will serve as a fitting final legacy of President Machen and, a great asset to the University of Florida's offerings for aspiring business students.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
