25 Thoughts Before Working Out

Everyone's heard the jokes about the infamous "freshman fifteen." I even find myself cracking the hackneyed joke: "Freshman fifteen? You mean freshman fifty." However, most parents and incoming freshmen don't realize that the freshman fifteen is a legitimate fear that induces sporadic urges to go to the gym.

Picking yourself up to go to the gym is never that easy. Unless, of course, you're one of those ridiculously fit people that plucks themselves out of bed at 4:30 in the morning to put in those eight miles on the treadmill. However, as much I aspire to be one of those people, let's face it--it ain't gonna happen. Whenever I decide to work out, my mind seems to be at war with itself:

1. I should really work out...

2. ...but I'm so tired.

3. I'll just take a power nap so I can get enough energy to work out.

4. That power nap (which turned into an hour and a half slumber) made me too tired to work out...

5. ...and now I've lost the time to study for my midterm tomorrow...

6. ...so I really don't have time to work out today.

7. That nap made me pretty hungry, though.

8. Shoot, I now I've eaten a lot of chips.

9. ...but I just ate all of those chips, and I don't want a tummy ache when I work out.

10. Okay, I'll study for half an hour while my stomach rests, then I'll go to the gym.

11. Wow, it's gonna be pretty cold out, walking all the way to the gym at this hour.

12. That means I should probably put on a jacket for the way there...

13. ...but my only jacket is at the bottom of my laundry basket.

14. Now that I think about it, I should probably do laundry.

15. I'll put my laundry in, go to the gym, and by the time I come back, my laundry will be done.

16. But what if I take too long at the gym and someone steals my clothes...

17. Dang, it's getting pretty late... I should study for that chem midterm.

18. I have now consumed the rest of the chips... so I should probably go to the gym.

19. I could bring my chem notebook to study while I'm on the elliptical.

20. But all of the fit people will judge me.

21. I guess I'll just leave my chem stuff in the dorm.

22. But then I'll be lack both knowledge in chemistry and self-esteem while I compare myself to all of the fit people.

23. Unless I drag my roomie out to work out with me and we can pump each other up.

24. And it's kind of late now, so hopefully no one will be there anyway.

25. Yeah, I guess I'll go to the gym now.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
