Sunlight filters through the leaves casting dappled shade upon my notebook. I study my handwriting as it looks much more real in natural light. Blue ink carves the paper in cursive, outlining the events of the War of 1812 in bullet points. Chartreuse highlighter blazes the page with fluorescent fire. I sit under an oak with my back against its trunk and find myself unwinding. I can breathe again, stress-free and in the open air.

1. Colbourn's Oaks

This is my preferred Study Spot. There are many across UCF’s campus, but this one, located between Colbourn Hall and the Breezeway, is my favorite. It is quiet and peaceful and only a few feet from a Starbucks. Just a short distance away is another great place to study.

2. Reflection Pond

The Reflection Pond is a nice area to finish homework. On hot days, the pond offers a cool wind while the shade from multiple trees block out most of the sun. Everyone usually goes straight to the library to bury their noses in a book, but being outside while studying can help students de-stress from our routine environment bombarded with false lighting and recirculated air.

3. Memory Mall

Another tranquil Study Spot is Memory Mall. This open field is a great way to get some vitamin-D. There are a few scattered trees, but the flat, grassy area is perfect for discussion groups. If you need a pick-me-up, a Starbucks is right across the field in front of Health and Public Affairs I (HPA1) building. Unwind as the sun soaks your skin and watch people play Frisbee with their dogs.

4. Lake Claire

Lake Claire is well worth the trek. If you have some major studying to do – I’m talking pages of notes in need of memorization – here is the place to do that. Find yourself a comfy spot under a pavilion or even on the lake shore. Let the sound of the waves and rustling leaves relax you. Frogs sing their chorus among the reeds as you chant “Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell” over and over again in your brain. Need a break? Rent a Paddleboard from the Outdoor Adventure Center located in the Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) or invite your friends to play volleyball in the sand court right near the lake.

5. The Boardwalk

This may seem like an unlikely place to study, but if you just need to review your notes the Boardwalk is the spot to do it. Literally nestled in a cypress forest, enjoy the sounds of wading birds, ducks and ospreys as you relax on one of the many available benches. This route becomes busy when classes let out, but it is surprisingly empty in the evening or early morning. Focus on memorizing your Spanish II vocabulary, but watch out for very friendly squirrels. You may have a curious study partner peering down from a branch!

6. UCF Arboretum

This article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the UCF Arboretum. When you can’t focus with the noise of your loud roommates or constant whispering in the library, this 82-acre forest is the place to go for some serious isolation. Cleanse your frustrated mind with the scent of hundreds of pines trees and follow dirt trails to a pavilion or shady spot to de-stress. Packed with Floridian wildlife, you’ll be surprised at the beauty of native flowers and abundance of animals. You may even see the endangered gopher tortoise. Most of all, the arboretum allows you to focus on your studying in quiet peace.

With all of these options, the choice is yours. Find the perfect Study Spot that’s right for you!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
