"Show me my way in life and I will build you a shrine." -Danny Thomas' prayer to St. Jude Thaddeus.
That quote is written on the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital's website, and it exemplifies everything that St. Jude stands for.
As listed on the website, their mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.
No child is turned away for his or her inability to pay. Because of this, the total cost for each patient receiving treatment is zero dollars.
When St. Jude opened its doors in 1962, the childhood cancer survival rate was at 20 percent. With the treatments invented and research preformed at St. Jude, today the survival rate is 80 percent.
There are a number of organizations that support St. Jude, and their fight against childhood cancer.
A well-known organization that raises money towards St. Jude is right here on our own campus: UA for St. Jude. Last year UA for St. Jude raised over $14,000. This year’s goal is to raise $20,000.
They host a number of fundraisers and events throughout the year for members of the organization, and anyone that has an interest in supporting St. Jude.
For example, they host percentage nights at restaurants in Tuscaloosa, and they recently hosted an event at the Ferguson Student Center for students to answer trivia questions about St. Jude.
They are hosting a kickball event on Friday, October 23, to raise funds for St. Jude. The event will begin at 1 p.m. and it costs five dollars to play.
For more information on the event, and UA for St. Jude, you can ‘Like’ their page on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @UAforStJude.
“I love UA for St. Jude because I get to be a part of something that’s bigger than myself,” said Melissa Esgro, the organization's secretary. “It’s great to see such a diverse group of people coming together to support one cause.”
