Making an UpRoar

Music has an inexplicable ability to trigger emotions, bringing even the most unexpected groups of people together and encourage self-expression. Baylor students have a unique opportunity to take advantage of all that music has to offer and bring the passion for it to life through Uproar Records, a fully functioning student-run record label here on campus.
Uproar provides students the opportunity to learn what the music industry is really like, from signing with a record label to putting on a show and dealing with the less discussed but indispensable business and marketing side of the music scene.
This organization gives students that plan to have careers as recording artists experience with what being in the music and entertainment scene is truly like, providing them with the opportunity to perform at campus events and promote their name in the Baylor community.

This year, Uproar booked two of its artists to perform at Dia Del Oso. Along with this, Uproar Records puts on various events of its own that are also useful marketing tools. Project Greenway is a recyclable fashion show and concert that Uproar puts on annually, and this year Tranny Stevens and Manifest Music Company, two of the three signed Uproar artists, participated in the event.

Music is, of course, the essential component of the organization, though you don’t necessarily have to be a music aficionado or world-class performing artist to get involved with Uproar Records. One of the great aspects of Uproar is that it provides the more business-inclined thinkers with the chance to get the same hands-on experience that the performers do.

“In school, we’re inundated in opportunities to learn about business on an academic level, but [we’re given] few opportunities to actually practice it. We have professors who are very knowledgeable about the commercial world, and the music business specifically, who are passionate about teaching their students. Uproar Records is the perfect place to operate a business with the guidance of industry professionals,” Taylor Bullard, the 2014-2015 president of Uproar Records, commented.

Artists are the obvious crucial element to the record label, and there is an extensive audition process that takes place in the beginning of the fall semester to narrow down the selections for the year’s talent. This year, three artists/groups were chosen to work with Uproar: Manifest Music Company, Tranny Stevens and Luke Hicks. Each has his/her own unique style, though they can all be considered to fall under the singer-songwriter category. Uproar plans on expanding their music variety, hoping to reach out to listeners of all genres of music.

“We have spent a lot of resources in the singer-songwriter field, which is good because that’s big in our community, but we would definitely like to branch out some more and pick up artists that would be viable options for on and off campus events” Bullard said. Uproar Records is an organization like none other on Baylor’s campus that provides an outlet to showcase the immense talent that is present on campus, both through the performers and the people working behind the scenes.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
