As a Queens native, for all of my life I have been taking the subway. It wasn't until high school when I had to ride the train every day to and from school. That's when I began to notice the good, the bad, and the ugly on the subway. Each time you walk into that cart, no matter what line, you never know what kind of people you'll see, hear, or smell. The beauty of this is that it truly showcases the diversity of the wonderful New York City if you really think about it. These are the many different people you'll see on the subway:
1. The Sleepers
Getting up in the morning is tough, I get it. Lots of people take advantage of the very comfortable subway to get their power nap before heading to work and school. Same goes for on their way back home, after a long, tiring day, the subway seems to be a perfect place for a quick snooze.
2. The Entertainers
All NYC natives can account for this one. Everyone has encountered singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, sorcerers...you name it. Some days it makes you laugh or smile, others you dig your head into your phone and turn up the volume on your headphones. Whatever the case may be, entertainers will always pop up one the subway.
3. The Tourists
I Love New York shirts, cameras around the neck and a subway map in their hands. Tourists are definitely not hard to spot. Though they are usually slow walkers, it's nice to see people admiring the city I live in. Plus, I feel accomplished when I successfully give them directions when they ask for help.
4. The Tardy Folk
In one hand, they're doing their makeup, the other hand is holding a coffee and spilling on them. A breakfast sandwich lays in their lap waiting to be eaten, and their phone is buzzing with emails and calls. Every morning on my way to school I saw one of these people. Probably a result of waking up too late....but it happens to the best of us!
5. The Reserved
These are our good old regular subway folk, just minding their own business and trying to get to a destination. No matter what craziness may be going on around us, and all the people we encounter, we can always rely on the subway to get us to where we need to go. Sometimes, it's just a little bit more interesting.
