When it comes to improvement, Twitter is a little behind.
From not having an edit button, to constant harassment from "trolls," Twitter absolutely needs to fix those problems. But instead, the social media giant decided to test a new feature on a sample group. And that test is to increase tweets from 140 characters to 280 characters.
Instead of listening to its users complaints and concerns, Twitter decided to completely ignore their customers and roll out a completely unnecessary feature. No user really asked for this update- instead there are more pressing issues that Twitter needs to fix. Twitter is notorious when it comes to abusive messages and users. Instead of creating effective tools to better combat this pressing issue, instead Twitter thought that they should be given an even bigger platform.
When it comes to appealing to a core demographic, nothing will excite Twitter users more than implementing an edit button. Most social media platforms have an edit button, and one of the biggest exceptions is Twitter. Yet, even after a constant demand from customers, Twitter basically does the exact opposite. One of the key strategies to expand an audience is to provide them with what they want. And afterwards, good word-of-mouth from users attracts more customers. So basically, Twitter is alienating their users right now with this new feature.
And then there is the issue of President Donald J. Trump. As basically everyone knows, he uses Twitter constantly, whether his colleagues and constituents like it or not. And most of the time, these tweets actually violate Twitter's terms of service. However, Twitter refuses to do anything about it, due to the fact that these tweets are "newsworthy" (even though last week Trump literally threatened genocide on an entire country). Yes, it is tricky due to the fact that he is the President of the United States. And yes, if Twitter bans his account you'll be sure that the Trump Administration will probably sue them in some sort. But there should be at least some action instead of inaction. On another related note, Twitter is supposed to meet with the House and Senate Intelligence Committee about the Russia probe. Unlike other tech giants like Facebook and Google, however, Twitter has remained mostly silent when it comes to action against the government. And usually, inaction means that you are complicit.
If there was a message that Twitter is sending right now, it is definitely its inaction against providing a litany of services. Instead of listening to users and even the United States government, Twitter instead rolled out a completely unnecessary try-out of 280 characters per tweet. This is why the website is such a toxic environment right now. Eventually, it will all come crashing down on them.
