20 Things I've Learned in 20 Years

It is crazy to think that I have been 20 years old for the past few months now, and that I am no longer a teenager. I was kind of sad to be leaving my teen years behind because I made such great memories as a teenager, but I knew I was starting to no longer feel like a teenager and that I needed to really become an adult now. I know 20 years is such a short time of your entire life, but I feel like so far into my 20th year, I have gained so many valuable life lessons. Here are 20 things that I have learned in the past 20 years to help guide you through this thing called life.

1. Life isn't always sunshine and rainbows, and you just have to accept the fact that you will have down days.

2. Do one thing a day that makes you happy.

3. Independence is key: learn how to fend for yourself in all situations.

4. It takes time to build relationships with new friends, so don't stress if you haven't found your people yet.

5. Losing close friends is just a part of life and maybe it is for the best, but if it was meant to be then the world will work in mysterious ways and bring that friend back in your life.

6. You never know when and where you will find your best friends, so always be open to talking to new people.

7. It is scary to go out of your comfort zone, but in the end it will pay off.

8. Always go for what YOU want, and don't let anyone or anything stop you.

9. Do not always rely on someone because sometimes people suck and will screw you over.

10. It's the little things that can make life amazing, so focus on those things when life is getting the best of you.

11. No matter what, your family will always support whatever you do, so always hold on to that relationship.

12. If someone is a negative influence in your life, do not be afraid to distance yourself from them.

13. Having a job will help you not only financially, but it will help you learn about social and responsibility skills as well.

14. Tell someone how you really feel because they will never know until you say something.

15. Talking to someone always helps, so don't hold in all your feelings to the point where you feel like you'll explode.

16. Get involved in a club or organization at your school because it's the best way to meet people.

17. You won't miss what you have until it's gone, so always be grateful for everything you have, no matter how big or small.

18. Love yourself, your body, and your appearance because you are beautiful in your own way.

19. Travel as much as you can because there is a huge world waiting out there for you.

20. Last but not least, have fun with your life and never take yourself too seriously. It's ok to laugh and embarrass yourself every once in awhile!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
