12 Items Every Young Professional Should Always Have On Hand

Necessities and tips for "real-world" success.

Whether you’re an intern running between meetings, a Broadway baby with a weekend of auditions or a GA just trying to make it to class before your students do, being a young professional often means having a fast-paced, exciting lifestyle. Being adequately prepared can make your day go a whole lot smoother. Here are twelve little items I've found to be most useful to my professional success.

1. Water bottle

I cannot stress enough how important adequate hydration is. To name a few, proper hydration can lead to higher energy, glowing skin and reduced stress levels. Grab a trusty bottle and get thirsty!

2. Something to write on

This can range anywhere from a full-sized notebook to a miniature pad of sticky-notes. When you need to make a memo of something in a conversation, it looks way betterto jot it down quickly on paper than to bury your head in your iPhone. If you use your phone as a planner, perhaps wait to enter the info until later.

3. Your signature pen

A good pen can be a game changer. Experiment with different products and find your pen. Think about how the pen flows and feels in your hand. For example, when I want to doodle, I use an extra fine point. When I'm taking notes, I prefer something smooth.

4. Travel tissues

Between inevitable spills, sneezes and tears, tissues are absolutely necessary.

5. The latest read

Found yourself with a rare few minutes to chill between classes or meetings? Instead of passing your time by thumbing aimlessly through social media, why not get lost in a story or be reinvigorated by an inspirational non-fiction?

6. Power Bank

After years of having a dead phone by five o'clock, I finally gave in and purchased a power bank. It has become my best friend, especially when traveling. This one is a must.

7. Breath mints

Bad breath can ruin any first impression or cut short any important conversation. Before all of my close-proximity interactions with people, I take a mint, just to be safe. I recommend mints rather than gum as the mint will melt away, whereas gum leaves the possibility for mindless chomping and smacking.

8. ChapStick

Dry winter months, sunburns and dehydration (see number one) are just a few causes of chapped lips. Unfortunately, peeling lips can speak louder than words when you’re attempting to make a good impression.

9. Umbrella

Carry one that’s pocket-sized and dependable, no matter the weather. You’ll be thankful for this one.

10. Watch

Not only does it look professional, but it’s also a great deal more respectful to discreetly check your wrist during a meeting than to check your phone for the time.

11. Deodorant

Overslept? You probably forget to apply some DEO before running out the door. Big meeting in an hour? If you’re nervous, you’re bound to sweat. Running all over the city today? Chance are you’ll need to reapply. There are countless reasons for this one. Your after-work dinner-date will thank you.

12. Briefcase/Bag

Because you're going to need something to put all of this in, right? You've got the tools. Go conquer!

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
