'Twas the night before New Year's, and all through the streets, the drunkards were yelling and slurring their speech. The women were dressed in their high heels and glitter, most of whom, by the end of the night, were walking barefoot through the litter. Cheers could be heard from every bar as the night faded to black.
Underaged drinkers tried sneaking into bars with the IDs that they lacked. The liquor store on the corner had been brutally invaded, by drunks, who, at 9 p.m., were already jaded. One girl takes off her shoes -- feet already covered in blisters. Another must have pre-gamed too hard, and starts throwing up before the mixer. A man offers girls drinks and his spirits are high, that he’ll find a lady at midnight to get kissed by. Another man at work stares at all of the fun in sight, hating himself for agreeing to work on this night. It’s 11 p.m. now, just one hour to go. Glitter falls everywhere as if it was snow.
The people are waiting for the ball to drop, pouring champagne and passing out shots. It’s 11:59 p.m. now, the moment heats up. They stare at the TV screens, each searching for a cup. It’s midnight, the ball has dropped! People yell and champagne bottles pop. Everyone searches for a face to kiss -- a friend, a stranger, a mister or miss.
The hype is intense, and it lasted quite a while, everyone dances with little swag and style. The “new year, new me” statuses get posted and tweeted, and people head to their cars from the bars they retreated. Some people stay out, some go to bed, but all with the promise of the new year in their head. May your hangovers die fast and your spirits remain bright. Happy New Year to all, and to all, a good night.
Happy New Year to you, and you and you and you. Maybe you went out, maybe you stayed in. Maybe you dressed up, or maybe you have kids and watched the ball drop on TV in your pajamas. Whatever you did, wherever you went, the new year is here and the old one’s not coming back. Today is just like yesterday, except today we’re in 2016 instead of 2015. The new year shouldn’t have to be your reason to change your life or do something you’ve always wanted to do -- it's just another day, and there’s no day but today.
