Have Your Pi and Eat It Too | Musings of a Math Coach

Now, as someone who has recently started college, I have essentially no time to watch any TV or do anything outside of school and sleeping. However, I hope that people in a less stressful situation are able to better appreciate my talents in the area of TV show-sleuthing. Here are some TV Shows that you can watch when you aren’t swamped with work.

1. Numb3rs

Produced by God of the Sci-Fi movies Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott, Numb3rs is a TV show about FBI Agent Don Eppes and his genius brother, CalSci (the fictional CalTech) professor Charlie Eppes. The show is a procedural in which Charlie Eppes uses various different mathematical formulas and equations to solve Los Angeles-based crimes. I highly recommend this TV show for anyone older than 13. This show is one of the main reasons why I was so interested in math when I was in middle and high school, as a lot of the math used in the show is similar to that which is taught in high school. Numb3rs is a great show for someone who wants a new TV show to binge. If you try to watch this show while doing homework, however, you will find that you keep accidentally watching more episodes while ignoring your Bio or Math.

2. White Collar

If you prefer your crimes to be more high-end and less gory, White Collar is the way to go. White Collar is a show about infamous con man Neal Caffrey. Caffrey works with FBI Special Agent Peter Burke, using his previous expertise to stop white collar crimes. Caffrey is played by the beautiful Matt Bomer, and he spends the first season looking for his girlfriend Kate (played by Alexandra Daddario of Percy Jackson infamy) and trying to figure out which mystery figure is threatening her because of his past. I am only about seven episodes into the first season, but I already love it. Caffrey (Bomer) exudes such charm and confidence that he is able to get answers just by flashing a smile.

3. House

And finally, if you enjoy tv shows with an overarching theme that have different main stories every week but do not like crime, I would highly suggest House M.D. The show stars Hugh Laurie (from that one episode in Friends and Veep) as the rude, sarcastic, and constantly disgruntled Dr. House. House is the leader of a team of doctors who diagnose patients with seemingly-unexplainable illnesses. If you are a fan of Sherlock, I would recommend this show to you. House’s character was inspired by Sherlock Holmes, from the way he gets bored of and dislikes uninteresting patients, refusing to do normal clinic rounds, to his use of deductive reasoning to come up with the most bizarre, yet still correct, diagnoses for people, regardless of what the rest of the hospital and his team are telling him.

I hope you enjoy watching these TV shows and I will live vicariously through all of you!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
