Over time, there have been many great television shows to come across the screen. Some shows are ongoing, such as "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "How to Get Away with Murder" and many others. There are others that are no longer on the air. Here are a few television shows that I miss, and could watch re-runs of all the time.
1. "Charmed"
This series was originally about three sisters who also happened to be witches. They all stayed together in San Francisco and protected people in need from demons and other evil creatures of destruction. They mainly tried to become a normal part of society and keep their powers under wraps. Sometimes they would try to quit magic completely, but it never worked out. Throughout the series, the sister are introduced to new family members. As the series grows, so does the love that the family shares, as well as their powers.
2. "In Living Color"
This show was similar to "Saturday Night Live" and "MADtv" because of the comedic skits that helped form the show. The cast was made up of many famous celebrities including Tommy Davidson, Jennifer Lopez, Rosie Perez, Jim Carrey, the Wayans family and many others. The show was created by Keenan Ivory Wayans. His siblings made up some of the cast on the show. In the skits, they poked fun at different current events, political issues and celebrity issues.
3. "Being Human" UK
The United Kingdom version of "Being Human" starts out with a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost all living in one home. During the first season, they each try to find their place in the world they feel that they don’t belong in. To add to this, they often come across more supernatural beings either seeking their help or trying to kill them. Every time things settle down, it seems like something else puts their existence at stake.
4. "The X-Files"
This popular series was about two FBI agents who traveled to different places trying to solve mysteries that were deemed supernatural. The two partners seemed to have different opinions on most cases. Usually, Dana Scully thought that there was nothing supernatural about a case. She thought that there was an explanation that they just had not stumbled upon yet. Fox Mulder, her partner, was usually open to the supernatural possibilities. Because Scully leaned towards reason and Mulder leaned towards the unreasonable, this made it easier for them to cover more ground throughout the series.
5. "The Tribe"
This show was about kids and teens who are left to fend for themselves after a sickness wipes out all of the adults. They create communities and somewhat decent environments. Just like when adults roamed the earth, the different tribes of youth were faced with wars, poverty and corruption. To add to the kids taking on adult responsibilities, they also took on adult issues dealing with family, friends and love.
6. "A Different World"
"A Different World" revolved around the lives of different college students attending Hillman College, a fictional historically black college. This sitcom was created by Bill Cosby. It showed a representation that is rarely seen on television today. The perspectives of the students varied impressively. It depicted the negatives and positives of college. It even followed some students into adulthood. The sitcom also tackled subjects that young people are still faced with now.
7. "The Golden Girls"
Oh, "The Golden Girls" is such a timeless classic. Four older ladies live in a house together in Miami. Blanche is the promiscuous southern belle. Rose is the naïve woman from Minnesota who always has a story to tell. Dorothy is the sarcastic, blunt New Yorker. Her mother, Sophia, is the Sicilian sassy, spunky woman who always has a comedic response for everything. These women survive being widowed, divorced and having adult children, along with other adventures. If ever there was a show made up on pure sarcasm and comedy, this would be it.
8. "In the Heat of the Night"
This is probably the show that I miss the most. Set in Mississippi, this show follows the police officers of the city of Sparta. This show took on many different topics. It portrayed the criminals in many different perspectives. It helped to open people’s eyes as to what some officers have to go through. It showed that Mississippi is more than just a place with country accents and sweet tea. It helped to open people’s lives to what it is like to live in the South. The South is not usually the hot spot setting for television shows. This series, in my opinion, showed the South for what it is. We have our good, and we have our bad. In Sparta, pretty much everybody knew everybody. That’s true in a lot of places in Mississippi. Occasionally, they ran into a bigoted person in the town. That is also true in Mississippi. People also gained a change of heart for the better on the show. That’s true in Mississippi, as well.
Let me clarify that I miss these shows, but that does not mean that I wish they had continued the series. There have been some shows that went on past their time. This, unfortunately, made those shows less appreciated. I do miss the shows and enjoy watching reruns whenever I can.
