I was walking down the street on the way to work yesterday when I noticed something. Legitimately every single person had their heads hanging down looking at their phones. To be honest I thought they were pretty talented being so fixated on their screens and not walking into walls, while I walk into walls completely alert.
I was waiting for some sort of smile or nod or at least some sort of eye contact with someone, but no, just fixation on whatever was on the tiny screen in their palms. All of a sudden I heard a voice from behind me say "Good Morning," it was this little old man who sold fabric in the store next to my building. I was surprised, and it made me kind of sad that I was surprised. I smiled and said good morning back, and realized that doesn't happen as often as it should.
I understand those uncomfortable walks where your nervous so you just look down at your phone as a sort of comfort, but I've seen people walking with another person and not even glancing up at them. I can't say I'm not on my phone a good amount, because I definitely am, but I think if your constantly on your phone while your with other people, you might want to re-evaluate some things.
I love those people who you can just talk to for hours and completely forget your phone even exists. If I'm being honest I love hearing peoples stories in person rather than reading about them on screen. The advancements in technology is nothing short of amazing, but no matter what nothing will replace real human interaction.
I read somewhere once that people need six human interactions a day to stay happy, and I think that's true. I love being with other people and doing fun things and running around and talking about the stupidest and most important things. People miss the really beautiful things going around them because they are trying to get the most perfect picture, or a searching for good lighting.
Don't get me wrong I love pictures as much as the next person, but is it really worth it if the picture is just a picture and there isn't some amazing story behind it. The way people talk, the way people listen. the look on their faces while you talk to them, the breeze of the ocean, the feeling of being in front of your favorite musical artist at a concert, those are things you won't find on any sort of device.
Keep using technology, just don't let it take over your life. Make sure you don't do things for the sole purpose of taking a picture, spend more time actually enjoying the things your doing rather than just trying to "look" like you are. Glance up from your phones, look at the people and things around you, open yourself up to the world.
