After Hugo Chavez' successor Nicholas Maduro was elected president in April 2013, tension in Venezuela has arisen. In recent weeks, the world has witnessed the conflict at an all time high, with protests surrounding the streets of Venezuela.
The cause of these protests is that the opposition claims Maduro has created a dictatorship instead of a democracy. In the primary election of 2015, the opposition was the majority, and Maduro was meant to step out of office. However, he did not. By March 29, 2016, the Venezuelan government dissolved the parliament. By doing so, it has transferred all power to itself. In addition to this, Henrique Capriles, a largely respected political figure in Venezuela who is the leader of the opposition, was banned from doing any political work for eleven years.
In Venezuela, there is an abundance of issues. For example, food shortages have become severe and medical assistance has become scarce. The issue has become so severe that recently, Venezuela asked the United Nations for assistance. In addition, government overspending and decreasing currency, as well as corruption, have led to deep economical issues for Venezuela.
Nicholas Maduro has added much more fuel to the fire recently, calling the opposition "terrorists" and "criminals" as well as receiving full support from the national military.
Ultimately, what was once a prospering united nation has now seemed to turn into a divided dystopia. The conflict in Venezuela seems to not be ending anytime soon, and until the opposition and Nicholas Maduro reach an agreement, which seems unlikely, the country is and will continue in turmoil.
