Trying To Be Honest

Dating someone who grew up with a single parent.

There are days when I look back at my life and wonder what it would be like having my both my parents together. That thought quickly goes away when I realize that without the trials and tribulations my mother and I faced, we wouldn't be the same people (and I LOVE who we are).

Without that amazing single woman, I wouldn't be who I am today. Growing up with a single parent differentiates you from the rest. This is especially noticed in the dating scene. Here are some things you should know:

1. We're Private People

Very few people know our lives and we would like to keep it that way. It's crazy to say but not even some of my closest friends can say they know everything about me. I'll mention things and it's like a surprise to them. It's not meant to be that way, it's just the way it is. We've seen how people can twist and manipulate situations so we don't let it happen. If you're one of those people, steer clear of us.

2. If our parent doesn't like you, go home.

Never take this personal, but they're overprotective. We tell our parents just about everything there is to know and if you can't accept that then sorry not sorry. We trust our parents judgement considering they know everything about us...so we'll trust when they say you're not the one.

3. We're attracted to independence.

We learned very young that we don't need anyone or a relationship. No ones needs anyone actually, so we certainly don't need you. J.Lo let us know what's up, so your money won't mean anything cause we have our own. We're not afraid of being alone. We spent so much time while our parent worked their butt off that we've grown comfortable with solitude.

4. We're great cooks.

If I have to go on and on about the amount of Food Network I've watched to convince you then come see for yourself.

5. Optimistic is our middle name.

We've learned to turn any bad situation good. There's no time for negativity because that never brought any good. We're your go-to person, your right hand for anything.

6. Laziness and Immaturity are a NO GO.

We know how to do anything and everything. Took us some time to get it right but from cleaning, cooking, sewing, fixing things, etc. — we got it on lock down. We're capable of handling it all, but when we see you laid up on the couch like a snob — it's a turn off. Just don't do it. We're known to act older than our age, and that's simply because we were force to grow up too fast. We take life seriously, so if you take it as a big joke...we'll notice and let you go.

7. We know the importance of family.

Growing up with a single parent taught me to cherish my family. Every single one of them have a special place in my heart. We've pushed each other beyond the limits sought possible. So believe me when I say when it comes to family, we get it. We won't barge into your life or get too personal. Eventually, we'll want to introduce you to ours and expect for you to do the same. Feeling like family gives us a sense of belonging.

Dating someone with a single parent doesn't seem so bad, right ? I mean we're mature, loyal and realistic people. We like our freedom but we're willing to share that sense of freedom with you. So as long as you show these qualities within yourself, we're capable of giving you the world and loving you bunches.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
