Going into college, I did not know much about sorority and fraternity life. Neither of my parents were involved in Greek life and I had no reason that I wanted to be involved either. Most of my high school friends were going through recruitment and that is when I started thinking about it. I decided to go ahead and try recruitment. I didn’t know what to expect with recruitment and I didn’t really care about knowing much about each house. I knew people in most of the houses but other than that, I was oblivious. As cliché as it might sound, going through recruitment was the best decision I could have ever made for myself my freshman year of college.
The people I have meet in my sorority have quite literally become my best friends. These people have known me for less than a year now and yet they know more about me than I know about me sometimes. The girls in my sorority have my back through anything that comes at me more than I ever thought possible. If you know me at all, you probably know how hard my freshman year of college was. On multiple occasions, however, my sorority sisters have been there for me to laugh, cry, rant, and so much more. I am forever thankful for everything my sisters have done for me.
Not all sororities are your typical movie sorority. I found this out very quickly when I went through recruitment. I wasn’t worried about being dropped from houses or not being liked by certain sororities because I knew that the system would work. If I were really meant to be in this thing called Greek life, I would fall into my place. As a dear friend told me during recruitment, “We may not like the system but it really does work. It allows us to find out the house that we are meant to be in and the house that we will thrive in.”
So I chose Greek life for so many reasons but the two main reasons were the people I met during recruitment and the fact that my sorority “fit me.” It is true that recruitment can be hard. Long days of talking to girls and dressing up. Trying to gauge how you would fit into a sorority while spending only 15 minutes with complete strangers is exhausting.
It can and probably will be hard to go through recruitment but if I have one piece of advice for those thinking about recruitment it would be this: just go for it. Try something new and see where this experience takes you! Have fun with it and just be you!
