Half the battle to beginning the journey of being healthy is finding where to start. The biggest issue people face when starting is pushing too hard, too fast. They see these images of people they aspire to look like and they’re hoping for results that very second. Having the self-control to take your own journey to success is where the whole adventure begins.

Five Truths to a healthier you

1.Don’t Freak Out

The beginning can be overwhelming with endless amounts of information. Remember that with everything you do, it is all about creating the best routine that will help create the best version of yourself. If something isn’t working, do not hesitate to stop and try something else. As with anything, a healthy life style and getting into the groove of things takes practice.

2.Talk About It

Getting in shape can be tough. One of the many ways people release tension from the day is by talking about it. Talk to your support team on your journey. Let them know what you’ve been doing, what you’ve been trying, what’s working and what isn’t. By doing this, you are not only telling others of the changes you are making and gathering feedback, you are also getting advice.

3. Set Goals

Be humble with your goals at the beginning. Set goals that are way out of reach, as well as ones that can easily be achieved. Not only will completing these little goals inspire you to push for the bigger ones you’ve set, but they will help set a standard of how your health journey will go. Practicing small goals, like adding 10 extra push-ups to the usual 25, will help make for a great foundation for a healthier life style.

4. Be Aware

Being aware of your own personal limits is a huge key to a healthier version of yourself. Always listen to your body - if it’s telling you it doesn’t have energy to complete tasks, take a step back. Be aware of how the new and improved version of yourself is operating on a daily basis (i.e., how you’re eating, how much energy you have). Being in tune with yourself is what sets the tone for your journey.

5. Dedicate Yourself

Constantly remind yourself that you put in as much effort as you get out. Putting in the effort to get the best outcome is what gives you those "wow" results! If you slack off with effort and get lazy, then those are the results you will get. Don’t get frustrated; don’t get lazy - JUST DO IT. Once you achieve your highest goal, raise the bar a little higher.

Reminding yourself of these "five truths to a healthier you" will provide the foundation you need to kick-start and go. More often than not, people set aside their health goals because they’re “too busy," but these are just excuses. It’s never too late to be healthy, and go for what you want.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
