I saw "Blumhouse's Truth or Dare" on Sunday, April 15th. I want to start off by saying I went into this movie with low expectations. From the ads, it did not look appealing to me, and as a result, I did not originally intend on seeing this movie. I ended up seeing "Truth or Dare" because my friend wanted to see it. Originally, she wanted to see it on Friday the 13, the day it came out. On that day, it had a rating of 17%. The rating had dropped to 15% on the day we actually saw the movie.

"Truth or Dare" is the story of a group of teens who get sucked into a demonic game of truth or dare. This movie includes actors such as Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey who you may recognize from shows such as "Pretty Little Liars" and "Teen Wolf." Overall, I would give "Truth or Dare" a rating of 2/10. It was not so bad that it made me want to get walk out, but it felt a lot longer than its runtime of one hour and forty-five minutes. Plus, I felt like it was not worth the $12 I paid to see it. There were certain things about the story in the movie that I did not like. I will discuss them below. Those who do not want spoilers should not continue reading.

Spoilers ahead

First of all, when the group goes on a spring break trip to Mexico, Olivia convinces the group to follow Carter, a stranger to an abandoned church. The storyline of bad things happening when going to an abandoned or secluded location is cliche and overused. later on in the film, Olivia realizes that the game of truth or dare has followed them home from Mexico, the group is quick to believe her that the game has followed them home.

Throughout the film, whenever a character is possessed by the demon that asks someone truth or dare, that person makes a weird face. It is obvious that the goal was for the face to come off as creepy or scary. However, the face was quite the opposite to the point where everyone in the theater laughed the first time the face appeared.

At first, the characters were always making sure that the person whos truth or dare turn was next would not be alone. However, as the film progressed it changed to be a pattern of where the person whose turn was next kept being found alone.

Throughout the movie, there is a subplot about Olivia's best friend Markie's dad killing himself. This is brought up multiple times throughout the film but overall seems like an unnecessary subplot. There is also a subplot of Olivia being in love with Markie's boyfriend Lucas, but this subplot is never fully dealt with.

Also, throughout the movie, Olivia and Lucas seem to travel back and forth between where they live and Mexico quite often. Shouldn't it spark concern to have two people cross the border so many times in such a short period of time? Yes, they were not doing anything wrong, but I think it would still raise some red flags.

At the end of the film, it seems like there is going to be a happy ending, but there is a quick twist when the only character who can stop the demon and end the game of truth or dare is killed. At this point, Olivia and Markie are the only remaining players. They can either kill themselves or add more players to the game. Olivia decides to make a video for her YouTube page explaining her trip and the game so that all her followers who view her video will become players in the game. The only problem with this is that she was supposed to lead a Habitat for Humanity trip during spring break, but she faked an illness to get out of that trip. Would she not be worried about people now realizing she faked an illness to get out of the Habitat for Humanity trip? I guess not.

As I mentioned before, I had low expectations going into this movie. However, I am generally not a fan of most of the stuff actors like Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey. I think that it is possible that you might enjoy this movie if you enjoy the kind of stuff these actors generally appear in.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
