Overthinking and unrealistic standards are destroying our happiness.

Life is actually a very simple thing. You're born. You live. You die. However, we tend to make it complicated. It's supposed to be enjoyable and fun; we only get one(at least with this mind). Unfortunately, it isn't always great. We try our best to live it to the fullest and be happy, but we make it difficult by trying to make it perfect.

To start making your life simple again try dropping these two happiness-killers: unrealistic standards and overthinking.

We hold so many unrealistic standards for ourselves and for others. Ranging from how we think we should look to how we think we should act. We are all human and we can only do so much to be the best version of ourselves. There comes a point where we just can't be better, and that's okay, but this isn't how it's portrayed. Instead, people are shunned or outcasted when they don't achieve these standards. Not reaching the unrealistic standards results in people thinking they aren't good enough. Dropping unrealistic standards would make life so much easier. People would feel less stressed and more accomplished which would result in happiness. It's easier said than done, but if we work together we can drop these unrealistic standards and be so much closer to simpler times.

Overthinking is the number one happiness killer. We overthink e v e r y t h i n g. We overthink the way people react to us, the way someone treats us, the meaning behind a text, the meaning behind someone's silence, etc. Along with that, overthinking stops us from doing things we want. Second guessing yourself is overthinking, and anytime you talk yourself out of a task or a good time, you're holding yourself back. Overthinking makes us sad, angry, and eventually, makes us stressed. Overall it's just making our lives more difficult. Overthinking can be named the root of most of our problems which is disturbing because that means we're making all our problems. In the end, overthinking needs to be ditched. When we limit what we take the time to overthink about we are making our lives simpler.

When you really think about it, the thing that is making life so difficult is our mind. The majority of our problems are self-created. If we never think of the standards or overthink things then the problems would never happen. If we work to stop and not think so hard about everything, life could really improve. I'm not saying this is the key to success, happiness, and simplicity in life, but it sure is a step in the right direction.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
