People think that being a part of a big family is all fun and games. This is true, but there’s so much more to it. Having a big family means always having someone there for you, it means that someone always has your back, but most of all it is all about having so many people who love you. So here is what it is really like having a big family.
1. When you finally get everyone in the same picture
This is never easy. You have to get at least 50 people into one picture and into one place after them all being on three different floors. You always miss one.
2. When someone shows up overdressed for Thanksgiving
When the last cousin arrives to the table in a button down shirt with fancy pants and everyone else is in a tee shirt and jeans.
3. Trying to give out food
Trying to give the same portion of food to everyone is nearly impossible. This machine would be really helpful around the holidays!
4. Family sleepovers!
There was no sleep, but there was tons of food, gossip and laughter. And somehow everyone fit in the same house.
5. When you realized they’re all just as crazy as you
It’s a family trait and we would not have it any other way.
6. They’re so loud
Having over fifty people in one house can get a little bit too loud. But the louder it was the more fun you were having.
7. Family Hand-Me-Downs
The clothes never fit you quite right but you are eternally grateful you never have to go clothes shopping.
8. The kid table
It does not matter how old you are, some cousins just never get to leave the kid table, not even if they are married and have their own kids.
9. Waiting for the Bathroom
No matter what time of day it is there is always someone in front of you to go. Sometimes you end up waiting on no one and the door was just closed.
10. Saying goodbye
Saying goodbye to everyone takes forever. You contemplate just leaving but, you know if you skip anyone it will be considered rude and you will have to turn around and start all over again.
11. Story Time
Listening to stories about the past will never get boring. The memories are timeless and the laughs last for hours.
12. Everyone lives so far away
From New Jersey, to New York, to Pennsylvania, to Connecticut and even to Arkansas. Travel the world one cousin at a time.
13. Trying to organize anything holiday related
Especially a Secret Santa! Having a big family means having to get a large number of people to cooperate, and they never do!
14. You were never alone
And this was the best part. Someone was always there to have your back, and you would not have it any other way.
Having a big family has made me who I am today, and I could not be more appreciative. We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.
