The Truth about Being a Cat Lady

Being a cat lady is a title that many people give themselves whether they have 1 cat or 12 cats. Although, being a cat lady is not based on the amount of cats you have but rather how you deal with cats as a whole, not just cats that are your own.

To start being a cat lady, one must own a cat. Some cat ladies are created from a young age while others are created from the realization that cats really aren’t as bad as they may seem. Some people can be changed into a cat lady by just one cat. For those who started at a young age, we started loving cats because of their tolerance for us. For example, I put my cat in baby cribs for dolls and carried him around like a baby. He became the subject of most things in my life. A cat became my favorite friend, and the need for many cats began.

The development of a cat lady furthers itself with cat interaction. Do you go to your friend’s house to see their cat? Are cats friendly with you and do they want to be your friend? If you find the answers to these to be yes, then you have furthered your progress of being a cat lady. Being welcoming to cats that are not your own is more important to your cat lady status than others. Cats know who is a cat lady and who is not. They cannot be fooled.

Are you trying to determine if your friend or family member is a cat lady? Some characteristics of a cat lady are the following; Always meowing back at cats when they meow at you, finding themselves surrounded by every cat wherever they are, telling cat stories as if cats are people and treating cats as though they are people. A cat lady also more than likely has cat hair on everything they own and rarely wear black because of the excess of cat hair on their clothes.

There is a large list of pros to being a cat lady. One of the great things about being a cat lady is you get to have personal heaters at all times. Cats are great for snuggling on cold nights because they too are cold and need to be warmed up. Cats are also good for keeping you company when you are home by yourself. You can play with cats or talk to cats and some, but not all, will react to this. You also get excited about any cat products you see in stores whether they are for your cat or for you.

While we have pros to being a cat lady, we also have a few cons. Cats can be really annoying. Some cats, not all, are really vocal and meow at you all the time. Cats also do whatever they want so they can break your nice things. You know you’re a cat lady when you put breakables high up where your cats cannot go. Also, cats are extremely unpredictable, one minute they want to snuggle you and the next minute they want to scratch you and fight you for no reason.

All in all, being a cat lady is more than just having a lot of cats. It’s a way of life that you take everywhere you go.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
