First, yes I go to an all women’s college and I’ve lived to tell the tale. There are tons of rumors about going to an all girls school. Personally, I love it! However, my opinion is not the only one who matters. I took the liberty of imposing on my honor’s philosophy professor to allow me to introduce a short 2-3 question survey for the ladies in my class to fill out.
The questions I asked the ladies were:
- What I like most about going to an all women’s university is….
- What I like least about going to an all women’s university is…
- Any other thoughts about going to an all women’s university:
As you can probably imagine, there was a variety of answers some which made me laugh. The girls here are pretty funny. Each student who answered was asked to leave their name off to keep them anonymous and the entire survey was absolutely optional. Without further ado, let’s see the results!
One girl wrote one thing she liked was a “more open environment.” One thing she did not ike was “no cute boys/men to stare at. At least I can use school wifi to download anime boyfriend apps.” She’s one of the funny ones. “Too much estrogen.” Another girl answered.
Many girls wrote about how much they loved not having to dress up nice to impress anybody, that they liked “being comfortable in PJ’s and ratty clothes.” “Sweat pants all the time” was one of my favorite answers, personally.
Just to clarify- We are not ALL LESBIANS. One girl shared in this preposterous stereotype that if you go to a women’s college that you are automatically labeled a lesbian. “When I tell people I go to a women’s college the first thing they ask about is lesbians, which can be annoying.”
Many girls answered positively about there being no boys on campus. They felt that there were “less distractions.” Some said, “after a while you don’t even notice.”
Friends of mine from different schools have asked me about the drama. “Isn’t there a lot of drama since it’s all girls?” To answer that question, there is less. One girl answered, “Sometimes there’s a little drama, but it usually gets worked out really easily.” The way I explain it to people is this: Think about what usually causes drama between girls. Boys. When you take the boys out of the equation, the drama is almost nonexistent. Any other drama, like mystery girl above stated, “gets worked out really easily. “
On a more serious level, I’ve always felt that going to an all women’s college really allowed me to find my full potential without any patriarchal fear. I wrote a paper about the implications of a male dominated society. In a coed classroom, that may not have gone down so well. In an all women’s classroom, I got an A. :)
Other girls seemed to agree with me on feeling powerful surround only by women, with exceptions of staff of course. One girl said that the lack of a male presence resulted in “support and encouragement to become powerful, to become a strong leader.” Another girl supported this argument in saying, “all the girls want to empower each other, it’s competitive enough that we push each other to succeed.”
All in all, going to an all women’s university is an amazing experience. Being surrounded with women who have similar goals and who want to help you grow as a person is something really special. Don’t be afraid of all the stereotypes, be who you are and go to school where will you will flourish!
