32 year-old NBA veteran Carmelo Anthony is currently averaging 22.6 points per game in the small forward position. By the end of this season, Anthony is set to earn over 24 million dollars. That's approximately 31% of the salary being spent on the remaining 14 Knicks players.
Carmelo Anthony is most notably known for being a high percentage three-point shooter, with the habit of not facilitating ball movement. For the Knicks, the constant lack of ball movement while Anthony is on the court, has made it difficult at times for his teammates to space the floor, and complete plays in times of transition.
As a result, players under development such as Kristaps Porzingis, and Mindaugas Kuzminskas are left with fewer minutes with the ball in their hands, lessening their opportunities to learn and grow. Their rate of success in this league, is heavily dependent on the teachings from a vocal and energetic team leader. Two characteristics of a "championship team" leader, that Anthony unfortunately has yet to exhibit.
As this year's trade deadline steadily approaches, much of the league continues to hear rumors indicating the New York Knicks are asking teams such as the Clippers for their level of interest in Anthony. For both the Knicks and Anthony himself, a trade with L.A. can steer things in the right direction.
On the Knicks side, team management can begin to build around Porzingis and focus on getting younger. Anthony can then finally join forces with his long time friend, Chris Paul. From this perspective, a trade involving these two teams is a more than ideal situation for Anthony's chances at winning a championship prior to retirement. Let's be mindful though, L.A. doesn't particularly find Anthony's remaining contract too enticing, and their roster may need a few more additions to be able to compete with Golden State.
