Understanding words versus actions are the deciding factor that distinguishes the credibility of people's promises. As an English major and reader, I tend to falsely focus and easily trust people's words. I seek reliability and faith in someone that can execute their words in a manner that makes me feel, believe and let my guard down. However, I had learned, through trial and error that simple "words" do not always suffice as promises.
“Action expresses priorities” – Mohandas K. Gandhi
People’s actions reflect their loyalty and gain trust in others. No matter how beautifully a person can articulate their feelings and emotions, nothing has credibility until actions are executed. The act of “saying” versus “doing” is very distinct and can support or revolt the thin line of broken, empty promises. If someone cares – they will listen, it if someone makes a promise – they will keep it. People’s priorities are reflected by what they do, not what they say.
“Always remember, actions speak louder than words. No one’s perfect, but we can strive to be better people.” –Demi Lovato
Understandably, no one can keep all the promises they make. Situations and circumstances happen, but how adamant someone is at attempting to keep their promise shows the validity of their words. My best advice? Don’t fall for empty promises. Search for a meaning and truth behind the actions and choices a person makes. Everyone makes mistakes, but how people in our life mend the hurt they may attribute shows the substance behind their promises and integrity.
