I think most of us are aware of the scandalous things Donald Trump has said about women. Most of them are extremely inappropriate and definitely not something we would want out of a President. The main quote that was floating around the news and social media was: "Grab them by the p***y. You can do anything." Though this topic has seemed to die down and has been replaced by other news, I want to take a moment to reflect on the hypocrisy that I see in our society, which gets severely outraged at someone who talked in such a degrading way, while we listen to disgusting Top 40 hits that are all about using each other for sex. Do you see where I'm coming from?
"I seen shawty get low
Ain't the same when it's up that close
Make it rain I'm making it snow
Work the pole I got the bank roll
I'ma say that I prefer them no clothes
I'm into that I love women exposed
She threw it back at me I gave her more
Cash ain't a problem I know where it go"
-"Low," Flo Rida
"I'd rather slip and fall in s**t than fall in love with you
before I tie a f*****g knot I'd tie you in one b***h"
-"That's All She Wrote," Eminem
Let's not forget about a couple of songs a popular rapper Lil' Wayne wrote: "P***y, money, weed" and "P***y Monster."
Those are just a few examples out of hundreds of the music that people listen to all the time. Why aren't we getting angry over that? Why aren't we angry over the way it seems so glorified to take advantage of each other's bodies nowadays?
How can we get mad at Trump for saying things like this, when we allow our own children to listen to crap like that? I am not defending Trump's statements. But I am pointing out the hypocrisy that no one seems to notice. It has become common for us to talk about each other's body parts as if they are objects.
My point is that we've become a society that claims to fight for equality, justice, and the like. We get angry at those who treat others with disrespect, as we should. So why do we support media that promotes disrespect and injustice? Why do we go see movies like Fifty Shades of Grey and listen to songs like "Low," then get mad at people who say things similar to what that media portrays?
The best way to start changing the way people act is by being an example. So please do not rant about how bad of a guy Trump is while you listen to songs that talk about tying up women. Yes, we should hold Trump to a higher standard because he is going to be the face of our country. But I also don't think we can rightfully judge others for what they say in private, when we ourselves support the same type of thing in public.
