Tell me if you've heard this before. Donald Trump is unstable. He has a dangerous mental disorder. He isn't "okay."
Part of the liberal response to Trump is to call him mentally ill as to imply that he is unable to be a competent leader. The latter is certainly true, as Donald Trump is a racist, an abuser, a warmonger and a disgusting capitalist.
But Trump's personality flaws have nothing to do with whatever mental illness he may or may not have. And in fact, implying that Donald Trump is a bad person because he is mentally ill is dangerous.
First, diagnosing Trump as mentally ill is pop psychology at its worst. No "psychologist" is able to diagnose a patient without spending a great deal of time together. It is simply absurd to think that any psychologist would be able to diagnose a person based on watching them on TV.
Second, even if Trump was mentally ill, it would be extremely unprofessional for people to publicly out him as such. Psychologists are bound to confidentiality unless they think their patient is going to physically hurt someone. So the fact that so many psychologists feel the need to carelessly talk about Trump's mental health is very disturbing.
But most importantly, being mentally ill does not mean someone is a bad person. I am mentally ill. I go to therapy once a week because of it and I take psychiatric medication. None of that means I am necessarily less competent than anyone else.
Mentally ill people face dangerous stigma in the US. This results in a substantial lack of resources for mentally ill people and sometimes even leads to violence. Despite the stereotype that all mentally ill people are violent, mentally ill people are actually far more likely to be the victim of a crime than the perpetrator.
It's entirely possible to resist Trump without making sweeping, alarmist statements about mental illness. So let's start doing that instead.
