Trump’s America: A Dystopian Horror Story

What happens when our country becomes an Orwellian nightmare?

Imagine if someone had crafted our reality after the George Orwell novel: 1984. An authoritarian administration reigns supreme while actively manipulating the thoughts and beliefs of the public. The “Thought Police” are out in full force to squash any notions of independent thinking and try such individuals for thoughtcrimes. And overseeing it all is Big Brother, the tyrannical and power-hungry ruler of the country. Sounds horrific, right? We would certainly never let such a nightmare come true in real life, especially after Orwell so beautifully painted the horrors of it. And yet, here we are.

“BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” said the posters around Airstrip One, the 1984 version of London. Big Brother had to make sure there were none who would oppose him. It is a paranoia demonstrated by those who are dishonest. When an individual knows they are doing something immoral, they seek to silence anyone who would point out that they are immoral. They will do all in their power to silence their opponents.

1984 may have been a fiction set in Great Britain, but it has manifested itself on American soil. We have an administration actively seeking to squash any independent thinking that challenges their authority. From barring all media who offer different opinions from attending press meetings, to shutting out the social media presence of our National Parks. The first step to creating a totalitarian society is to silence all dissenters. And that is exactly what the Trump administration is attempting.

We have a man occupying the oval office with an infantile mentality and a severe God complex. He believes himself to be a king, and all who oppose him are wrong. He is surrounded by people who have an extremely limited understanding of the world and the impact that damaging rhetoric has on our country. He has crafted his snake-oil presidency to perfection and sold it to all who wanted to believe his lies.

I, like many, thought Trump was too stupid to do any serious harm to this nation. I was wrong. Not a single day has passed since his admission into the oval office that he has worked to undermine progress made over the past 24 years. He has thrown dangerous rhetoric with China threatening war. He has dismissed the Attorney General for not siding with him on his unconstitutional Muslim ban. And he has undermined equality rulings for LGBTQ individuals. He is the walking, mumbling definition of fascism.

There is no individual in this nation more unqualified to occupy the oval office than Donald Trump. Impeachment is extremely likely, but the issue that arises is the damage that the entire Trump administration can and will do to the country by that time. There will be a great deal of repair to be done once this administration comes to its much-needed end. Until then, we must fight. The 2018 mid-term elections will be some of the most critical battles ever found on America soil. And it will all take place at the polls. Now is the time to start researching your candidates and to act by campaigning and calling your legislators. Hold your public officials accountable for their actions and words. We elect them to represent the people. Make sure they do!

Donald Trump is not now, nor will he ever be, my President.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
