After hearing about the damaging "Trump Tapes" all weekend and seeing the various reactions on social media, there was one account in particular that I was focused on: Donald Trump's. Since the Republican nominee is known for sounding off against his opponents on Twitter, I figured he would chime in about the latest video of him and Billy Bush.
However, this assumption was wrong. On October 7, he decided to lay low and not comment on the situation. After over 24 hours of waiting for him to tweet, he finally did past midnight on October 8 with an interesting, filmed apology. Trump said he was wrong for choosing those words toward women and that he was sorry for the entire thing. Though he did apologize at the beginning of his video, he then fired an attack toward Hillary and Bill Clinton about alleged misconducts on their part. This is where classic Donald Trump came back to show that his ways of dealing with these stories will never change. No matter what it is, he can never truly be remorseful for his actions.
What makes this latest scandal involving Trump so different is the fact that he did remain silent on social media. Over the past three months, Donald Trump has tweeted every single day, at least once, as the election has been heating up. This lack of communication to the world and delayed apology shows that this story was a huge deal to the American people and politicians. His staff had to do some serious damage control and that obviously involved them making sure that Trump's Twitter feed wasn't full of defensive remarks.
Overall, this silence tells us that we have hit a breaking point as a country. People have rethought their support for the nominee and major politicians such as Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney and many others, have condemned the tape.
Additionally, the Republican Party and Chairman Reince Priebus have also expressed outrage. Priebus' statement summed up many people's thoughts by saying, "No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever.”
Maybe it is time for us to wake up and realize that this man and his thumbs do not belong in the White House. A man bragging about sexually assaulting women cannot be forgiven, and if we do forgive him, it will set a disgraceful standard on how we view sexual violence. As human beings, and Americans, we need to stand up to those who let power get to their heads and not give them any more power to abuse.
It doesn't matter if you are a Republican, Democrat or Libertarian, we should all agree that this way of talking about women is unacceptable.
If the country can come together and make sure his bid for president is stopped, maybe his Twitter account will go silent for good.
