Ignorant. Narcissistic. Sex-predator buffoon.
These are just a few of the names President-elect Donald Trump was called by his opposers during the 2016 presidential campaign. In addition, Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton was called a corrupt, greedy liar.
And even though the election is over, the name calling hasn't ceased. Pop culture news site BuzzFeed published a 35-page dossier full of unverified claims about Trump. In response, Trump referred to BuzzFeed as a "failing piece of garbage" in a press conference. BuzzFeed retaliated by selling "failing piece of garbage" merchandise, which they will donate to press-freedom groups.
This is not the only instance of Donald Trump using name calling as a tactic of propaganda. He's referred to Senator Chuck Shumer as "a clown," called Meryl Streep an "overrated actress" after her comments about him (indirectly) at the Golden Globes, referred to the cast and producers of Hamilton as "overrated" after Vice President-elect Mike Pence was booed at a performance, and branded Hilary Clinton as "a crook" multiple times throughout the campaign.
Name calling is an incredibly weak form of propaganda. Rather than attacking the argument/idea brought up, it just attacks the person itself. This incredibly poignant and powerless form of propaganda has no place in the presidential election; yet, it won Trump the presidency.
Trump had to resort to placing labels on people and tearing them down in order to prove himself the better candidate/person. It makes me believe he only dismisses the words of others and call them names because he cannot argue/stand up for himself.
Think about the impact this will have on our nation once he is president. What will the implications be? What if his name calling leads to domestic and international disputes? Will he be able to defend us then? Or will he attempt to "name call" his way out of every situation, hoping he will win out of fear?
The name calling must stop.
