Louis C.K just had his new special released on Netflix. There was a hint of a reference to President Donald Trump that assumed anyone watching the special at that moment, was watching from a fallout-ridden world that nuclear weapons had caused. He was on Stephen Colbert to promote his new special for Netflix and I could tell he is nervous about the state of this country as much as everyone else is. Comedians have used Trump as a joke, but with so much of Trump in the world, I am glad there weren't twenty minutes exclusively talking about politics and Trump the way David Cross did in his Netflix special.
This does not mean I think it is cheap for David to do it because Louis shared in an email to his fans before that says he doesn’t like to put his opinion out there or everyone freaks out. Is Louis trying to be politically correct? Maybe, but beef with the President seems like the last thing a comedian in his late forties wants to deal with. Although he did call him a “gross, crook, rotten, lying sack of s#!+” on television, but Trump’s the President, his job is to take abuse.
I am used to seeing comedy follow a traditional path that allows a comedian to grow from their last special and try their comedy in different mediums such as sitcoms or movies. Today seems to be working all against the current administration. Donald Trump is creating all these pockets of comedy everywhere he goes. Seth Meyers started doing daily updates in his "Closer Look" segment. Samantha Bee is lifting off on TBS and Saturday Night Live is constantly tearing apart the different aspects of the administration with parodies that literally have me on the floor laughing.
These mediums are a safe way for me to be able to deal with the current state of things. I do not think I could watch thirty minutes of what Trump is up to on news networks because of how unhappy that would make me, I pity the vases in my vicinity. Even with the crazy amounts of parody and satire, I still have trouble taking in all the information.
Trump's presidency is exhausting. So many changes are happening so fast that it is hard to follow all of them and before I am even done being outraged at what just happened, something worse happens that makes me forget the last thing. This is not good for the public because it normalizes the actions of Trump. Trump is not normal. Weird refers to things that are different from the rest. In terms of humanity, we are weird with our cars and smartphones.
But in terms of Presidents, Trump is weird. There are bipartisan issues that have no negative effects for everyone that Trump is advocating. An example is one I saw on Bill Maher's show about lead bullets. These are only banned because eagles get poisoned from eating the remains of hunted deer. Isn't the eagle on our quarter?
Although writing this just helps perpetuate the way comedy has been going, I feel we need it more than ever. It may seem like Trump is just shoving his mess in everyone's face, Vox talks about how this is all a good thing. It talks about how satire can be the best way to cover the news due to how crazy it has been lately. So basically, comedians worry me when they have trouble making a joke about what's happening. I am just nervous because I really hope no one has to see Louis' special covered in fallout someday.
