Oh, brother. Another article about Trump, right? There is so much hot air flying around regarding the baffling presidential candidate that I hesitated before publishing this piece, but I eventually decided that what I have to say is too important.
Trump is here to destroy. Yes, to destroy. His supporters, desperate to justify their participation in a personality cult, scream into oblivion about his willingness to “tell it like it is.” If there is one good thing that comes from it, it is that his vicious and unscrupulous intentions are no longer a secret. The man is here to destroy.
Last week, he stirred up controversy, verifiable proof that the world is still turning on its axis. This time, it was because of vague, yet hugely problematic comments regarding his plans to legally punish women who seek out an abortion once he outlaws the practice. Within hours, his tune changed as his campaign directed blame to the doctors in this hypothetical scenario. Aside from the sheer lack of clarity or specifics, the man seemingly has no idea what he is saying about his own policy opinions or else an atrocious capacity for thinking on his feet. As a classmate of mine pointed out, the words “woman” and “doctor” sound almost exactly alike, so it is easy enough to see how he confused them. Friends, for all that is wrong with Mr. Trump as a presidential candidate, one of the most unsettling to me is his utter lack of consistency. He completely shifts his policy positions within several hours, and regularly at that. It is gross.
As one who cares not simply about Trump’s flailing but more specifically about the issue that he is batting around, the murder of unborn children, I found his comments from last Friday even more disturbing. “At this moment the laws are set. And I think we have to leave it that way,” says the Donald.
He calls himself pro-life? I never really bought it, but now it seems apparent that he has none of the moral conviction that marks the true pro-life movement. He does not care about unborn children; he cares about pro-lifers’ votes. Now that the pressure is on, he is attempting to squirm out of the hole he dug for himself by lowering expectations for what he will accomplish in the area of abortion law.
Mr. Trump, with all due respect (which is very little, considering your uppity ambivalence to innocent blood), our American laws are not “set.” The only laws that are set are the eternal ones broken every time a young voice is cut off before it even sees the light of day.
He continues, “The laws are set now on abortion and that's the way they're going to remain until they're changed.” First, I am grateful for his clarification that laws stay the same until someone changes them. His knowledge of the intricacies of American politics and the way that laws change is astounding. It is a shame that he does not care to change them in the first place.
Much has been made of Trump’s pathetic abuse of the English language. Small wonder, in my opinion, that he should have such trouble formulating coherent thoughts when it seems that he possesses no firm convictions to speak of, other than that of his own immortal status. He says the following: “A question was asked to me. And it was asked in a very hypothetical. And it was said, ‘illegal, illegal.’ I've been told by some people that was an older line answer and that was an answer that was given on a, you know, basis of an older line from years ago on a very conservative basis.”
Pardon? I have no idea how to interpret that miserable train wreck of a thought. The most I got from it is that he is distancing himself from those radical conservatives who want to make abortion completely illegal right away. Sir, you do yourself no favors in my eyes.
Almost daily, I cringe at the thought of what Donald Trump is doing to the conservative movement in America. He is not a conservative. He is a phony, a fraud, scamming those who think they are fighting the establishment. I find it hard to believe that a man with the genius to make himself into a billionaire could do so unintentionally. Trump is here to destroy.
There are many things about Trump’s presidency that repel me, but few are as pressing as his flip-flops on the abortion issue. I apologize for the depressing tone of this article, but I feel betrayed. I feel utterly betrayed. It looks as if even the Republican candidate for president will take the mass murder of American children lying down. That is not something that I will take lying down. Trump will not make America great again. America will never be great while her hands are stained with children's blood. I will close by echoing the words of Thomas Jefferson: “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.”
