First and foremost, that term kind of triggers a simultaneous wander send-off in my mind all while also triggering a cringe. It’s a very touchy subject. It’s more intricate than just a plain yes or no. It’s disappointing but I truly believe the soulmate we think of when that word is said to us, is not of true existence.
When I think of souls (which by the way, not everyone believes in) I think of Donnie Darko. The best and my favorite film of all time. So much depth and emotion in a drastic production that is Donnie Darko but more so, the progression of his character in the movie.
There’s a particular part in the movie. The Halloween party scene where it is made viewable to both Donnie and the audience that there is a sort of entelechy spewing out of each being. One that is ahead of the being itself but carries a path for where it is going to go.
That visually enticing flux object is perceived as both the soul and the path of where the body is going. It’s truly an interesting topic overall. That the soul is ahead of the physical body and knows the path. Our bodies just naturally follow after it, unknowingly.
When I think about soul mates. That picture comes to mind. The flowy entelechy object gravitating invisibly before us and encountering another entelechy that belongs to someone else. What do they do when attracted to it? They mingle in front of the being. Each person in each other’s presence. Beside one another or casually having conversation sitting by a table and the souls are there in front of them. Mingling.
The dictionary defines a soul mate as “a person with whom one has a strong affinity, shared values and tastes, and often a romantic bond.” From that, then the question is asked. Is there such thing as only ONE true soul mate in the world? Honestly, as far as the soul goes...I don’t think so. The soul is attracted to anything. The soul nurtures and cares. It’s possible to think of more than one person as a soulmate because I truly believe it’s possible to have a deep affinity for many that share the same tastes as you. As I have grown older I have definitely been exposed to 2 people so far that I believe will be my soulmates forever. It’s an everlasting mingling of the soul that takes place. Where, no matter if far, no matter if not around that soul for some time, no matter what the connection is and will always be there. That’s what a soul mate is to me. A divine soul mingling that leaves an everlasting connection. The kind that no words are exchanged but with the eyes everything is understood.
On a Twitter poll of people around the ages of 19-23 the same question was asked, and 67% said there is no such thing as ONE true soulmate while 33% said yes, there is.
