Love is one of the most powerful forces in the world.
It is something almost everyone searches for
And yet
In this time
Seems so hard
Almost impossible
To find.
We say that those who find their love are lucky
And tell them to be grateful for their "other half"
As we jealously watch their lives through screens.
This is
Of course
Unless something goes wrong.
Well then all we do is attempt to comfort them
And tell them to move on
And find their next love.
Their "true love".
The problem then becomes that very few people can actually define "true love".
It means something different to everyone
And has become clouded in a sense.
So what is "true love"?
My definition of "true love" started with Disney movies.
"True love" is sacrifice
Kindness
Overlooking the other person's flaws
Overlooking station and past
It can be hard
But everything will work out in the end.
Real life has taught me that isn't always the truth.
There's "right person, wrong time"
There are some scars and flaws you can't overlook.
Sometimes there are so many obstacles that you have to admit you were wrong
That person wasn't your "true love".
But what if they are?
My definition of "true love" has become simple.
Kindness
Respect
Understanding.
It is sitting on the couch letting me hide from the scary movie on your shoulder
Even though I picked the movie.
It is sitting in the car applauding my one-woman Broadway performance
Or singing along with me and making it a duet.
It is sitting in the crowd to support the show I've directed and helped put together
And telling me afterward that it is great even if you hated it.
It is holding me close and telling me everything will be fine when I've had a rough day
Or we've had a fight
Or I'm having a panic attack
Or I can't sleep.
That is just me though.
"True love" means something different to everyone
So what does it mean to you?
