True Life: I'm Addicted To Fitbit

Not all addictions are bad ones, especially when you're addicted to Fitbit.

True Life: I'm Addicted To Fitbit

If you're anything like me, the minute you bought your Fitbit, or one of the other million fitness trackers there are, you flaunted it everywhere and felt like a boss. It became your world. That first week you were so dedicated it wasn't even funny. There are two types of people when it comes to Fitbit: the ones who get it and don't really do much other than let it do its own thing and then there are the ones, like myself, who use every single aspect of it and are totally, 100% addicted. I asked some of my Fitbit loving friends what they love most about their tracker and there were 10 similarities between us addicts that I think we don't always realize.

1. Meeting your step goal is your top priority.

You love watching your steps rack up throughout the day but when 10 o'clock rolls around you start to panic if you're still way under your goal. You start doing laps around your house and when that's not enough you even contemplate putting your Fitbit on your dog to get steps.

2. You sync your tracker to the app just like you refresh Instagram or Twitter.

Syncing your dashboard every three minutes (even if you're sitting) just to see if you burned any more calories or magically got a step.

3. You suddenly care about your sleep patterns

Before you got your Fitbit, you probably never realized how long you were actually sleeping and, especially, how many times you were restless throughout the night. Well not that your Fitbit conveniently tracks your sleeping patterns you always make sure to go to bed early enough so you can wake up with that green star.

4. You won't take your Fitbit off for anything (unless it needs to be charged and that is only done when you don't have to walk)

When your Fitbit is charging you make every effort to lay in your bed and not move to much so you aren't missing too many valuable burned calories. You certainly WILL NOT get up for anything, absolutely anything. Steps are far too valuable to miss.

5. Challenges with your friends get pretty heated.

Your biggest pet peeve is when people wait until the end of the day to sync with the challenge. You realize that your friend has 500 more steps than you and it's over. How dare they get more steps than you. The next morning you walk around your house a few times to make sure you're back on top.

6. You can never decide which goal is more important

Are steps, calories, miles, stairs or activity minutes more important to you? Some days you just have to pick one but there is nothing more satisfying than when your dashboard lights up all green. Pure beauty.

7. You never leave home without your Fitbit.

The saddest thing ever is when you're out shopping or at work, look down and realize you forgot to put your Fitbit on. All those steps for nothing.

8. Green is your favorite color, red is your enemy.

when your dashboard lights up green, its magical. You've reached every single goal for the day and you can rest easy knowing you are super healthy and awesome. But when red creeps into your calorie dashboard because you just had to eat that extra scoop of ice cream and you hadn't burned enough calories yet you shed a tear.

9. Walking is your favorite thing to do now

Those days of laying on your couch are over, until you reach your step goal for the day that is. You volunteer to take the dog for a walk, go grocery shopping and do yard work just to get steps in.

10. You want everyone to know you have a Fitbit.

Slipping something about Fitbit into casual conversation is exhilarating. You love any time you get to talk about how wonderful and convenient it is.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
