True Life: I'm Addicted To Astrology

True Life: I'm Addicted To Astrology
The Open Mind

I once had a teacher in high school who began class one morning by asking for a show of hands of who had read their horoscope for the day. My hand shot up, as this was something I did each morning, no prompting necessary. A few other hands around the room went up, no one's interest clearly as piqued as my own. He then went on to explain that under no circumstances can stars, that have been dead for more years than we can count, align a certain way to predict our behaviors or the way our lives are going to pan out. Miffed, I then zoned out for the rest of the class period, remembering all of the astrology charts and horoscopes I've consumed over the years, all of which perfectly explained my bossy, Leo self.

I've been reading my horoscope for as long as I can remember, along with all of my friends and family members, every boy I've ever liked, and even some teachers, all in the hopes of better understanding the people around me. And guess what? It works! That Earth sign did clash with my fire sign. I do get along better with Sagittarius'. I've spent hours agonizing over relationship compatibility, sign characteristics, and yearly horoscope predictions, and they almost always lead me in the right direction. They tell me about the people in my life. Odds are, if you have any kind of an impact on my life, I'm reading your horoscope as soon as I'm done browsing my own. (How else do you learn about people?) No matter how little storage is available on my phone, my Daily Horoscope app can never be deleted, as my daily alerts to check my horoscope are undoubtedly the highlight of my day.

There are always people that laugh at me. Call me crazy. Much like my teacher in high school, there are many crazy skeptics out there when it comes to the stars holding any kind of truth. They don't want to believe that just because your birthday falls between a specific set of dates that it has any correlation as to how you'll behave. If I hadn't seen it come true time and time again, I'd probably feel the same way. However, I've spent far too many hours researching my rising sign (Scoprio!) and moon sign (Libra), among other things, to not buy into this stuff.

Just because I'm a big believer in all things astrology doesn't mean that I let it control me. I simply find uncanny similarities by what astrologists have found and my personality and my friends' personalities. Having said that, I'm a Leo and my roommate is a Capricorn, and astrologically, we shouldn't be a great match. And, yet, here we are -- peachy as ever. I'm not saying the stars are right all the time, but most of the time, they are. My best friend is an Aquarius, and our opposites attract in the perfect blend of friendship.

I won't stop reading my horoscope anytime soon. Or harassing everyone around me to read their own. The stars have gotten me this far. I can't turn back now.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
