True Life: I'm A Hot Mess

This goes out to all of my girls who don't have it all together. You know who you are.

Hey you! Yeah, you. I see you sitting there with your hair in that messy bun, slightly darkened eyelid from yesterday’s mascara, and don’t think I didn’t see you yawn even though you got a solid 10 hours of sleep. You can’t see me, but I know you very well. You are what I would like to call a “hot mess” and I am one of you.

I find myself quite often trying to stay away from this lifestyle, but it seems to always find its way back to me. One day I am looking well put-together with my hair and make-up on point, my totally business casual outfit from The Loft or J Crew, a clean room and a neatly filled out planner. By the next week, you would never guess I knew what a planner even was. Not to mention my laundry basket is beginning to look like the world’s eighth wonder because it appears that I have lost the directions to the laundry room.

Oh yeah, you lose stuff. A lot. You somehow manage to misplace the most valuable items in your life in a matter of minutes. These items include, but are not limited to: your wallet, keys and of course, your cell phone. Don’t worry, not only is your laundry room located in your house, but so are all of those lost valuables you haven’t been able to find for hours, days, or even weeks. It sure is great that you have such awesome friends who drive you wherever you need to go and have Venmo accounts so you don’t miss your classes or starve.

Honestly, though, do you really want to find your car keys? Your car is a mess and you probably can’t stand the idea of how messy it is. Your well put-together friend’s cars are so much more enjoyable to ride in. They also have an aux cord so you don’t have to put your phone on loud and stick it in a cup to listen to your new favorite song on repeat.

You can’t use your phone for too long though because it sucks. Your phone is you but in cellular device form. It doesn’t hold a charge, the speaker is slightly water damaged and your screen, well, your screen looks like you do in the morning: busted. You should probably go get it fixed, but you won’t. And it isn’t because you are lazy. It is because you are so busy.

Who on Earth has time to be 100 percent put-together? Between internships, full-time school schedules, jobs, extracurricular activities and sleep, there is no way to have it all together. You could be a little more organized and maybe brush your hair an additional time or two, but the messy look is in. And let’s be honest-you wear it well. You keep doing you girl, you keep doing you. By the way, your keys are probably tangled in your bed sheets. So, don’t panic yet.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
