True Facts About Mermaids

Mermaids -- they are the majestic, totally real, half-human half-fish creatures of the great depths of the unknown sea. But are they really though? Many people believe mermaids to be completely made up mythical creatures. However, there is so much we don't know about the world we live in, it is very possible that they do in fact exist. They most likely don't look like Ariel or Aquamarine or have a human-level of intelligence (but then again who knows). We are surrounded by mystery. There have been accounts of deep sea divers seeing what appeared to be some sort of mermaid-like creature (click here to see one, skip to 1:20 if you want to see action), and it is not completely bonkers that this could be true. While most sightings reported on the internet are probably heavily photoshopped and cannot be trusted, this one is the most believable.

The ocean is a lot like space -- there are bound to be lots of different creatures out there on other planets and different galaxies, just like there are plenty of undiscovered creatures lurking in the sea. Who knows, these creatures could be invisible. Heck, they could even have a portal somewhere at the bottom of the ocean where they go back and forth from their world to our world. You never know. If no mermaid creatures were ever depicted in stories, no one would be calling them mermaids, they would just believe they had discovered a new type of aquatic creature. Perhaps the idea of the mermaid came up because someone actually saw a mermaid like creature long ago, and stylized it into the magical creature we see in movies and tv shows. So maybe the only reason mermaids are known as mythical creatures are because people have made them into something magical, when in fact, something similar could be a totally normal specimen in the sea.

Imagine if it turns out that the mermaids somewhere deep in the ocean where at the same mental level as humans. They could have their own underwater world. And they don't come up to the land to see us land-folk because they don't have legs. Or maybe they are smart to stay under water because they can see all the corruption up on the land through their magical crystal balls. It all makes sense if you think about it (or not think about it too much). If mermaids surfaced and they turned out to be another form of intelligent life on Earth, how do you think it would impact life on Earth?

I once heard one of my classmates in first grade say, when going around saying what we wanted to be when we grow up, she responded with "a mermaid." The teacher chuckled, but I mean, it's not entirely impossible. If animals can be genetically engineered, that girl could arrange to have some fish genes added to her genetic makeup and have some plastic surgery to get that mermaid tail and gills. Then she would be a full-fledged stereotypical mermaid. But if she doesn't want to spend all that money, there's always Disney World and someone needed to play Ariel and her mermaid friends. So basically, if you can be a mermaid when you grow up, anything is possible.

I know the title of this article was 'True Facts About Mermaids' but as we have not yet been close enough or sure enough of their existence, a list of fun facts is not possible, sadly. But maybe someday we will. However until then, we can leave the many mysterious aspects of the world, such as the existence of unknown creatures, to our imaginations -- and sometimes that's more fun.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
