Though sometimes the truth of our world can be disturbing and scary, it is still the truth.
True crime YouTubers bring to the platform knowledge and awareness, that we could all use. They bring to light cases that haven't gotten the media attention that they should have or cases that have been forgotten. They give those who feel like they don't have a chance, a chance.
I stumbled upon true crime about two years ago and I have never stopped watching since. Although it sparks my interests for obvious reasons, like the fact that I am a criminal justice major, I realized that it was more than just an interesting topic. It was a topic that NEEDED to be talked about. We don't think of missing people unless we see a post while scrolling through twitter or facebook. Some of us may repost others may not, but we normally forget about it in a matter of seconds. And then what happens when those faces are forgotten?
Families start to lose hope. Cases grow cold with time. Cases are never solved. So what can we do to prevent this from happening? We can spread awareness of them. No matter if it's a missing person's case or an unsolved murder, people's cases still need to be heard. And that's what true crime YouTubers do.
They start a conversation. They get people interested in cases from a different perspective. They work closely with campaigns that work on finding people. They offer theories. They ask their viewers for theories on cases. Though sometimes people may feel that theories should not be put out there, it's what can get the conversation started. It's what could make someone's name stick.
Not only does it bring light to cases, but it also brings awareness to crime. It makes it more real to everyone. It proves that there is a possibility of things like this ACTUALLY happening. This means that you become more aware of what to do and what not to do. You pay attention to the world around you. Though this isn't made to scare you, it can induce the kind of fear that makes you more protective of yourself and others.
So I suggest you go watch a true crime video. I suggest you hear cases and become more knowledgeable. I think a little true crime is what everyone needs. To help make a change, to get cases heard, and to find the answers that are needed.
