Being a girl in a fraternity is never an easy thing to explain to people outside of a co-ed organization. I can't tell you how many times I have been questioned or awkwardly stared at, but even though all of the questions or awkward stares, being a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi is something I would not trade for the world.
Despite Kappa Kappa Psi being a service music fraternity, many of my brothers are not music majors or minors - they just love music. We come together for one cause, and that is to help and benefit the university bands on our college campus.
Our chapter has come a long way since the time that I was a freshman and a prospective member of Kappa Kappa Psi. Our chapter, the Zeta-Lambda chapter, almost died out at one point, being left down to only three brothers, but our brothers never quit...this year we have a total of 20+ brothers, and that my friends, is amazing.
I love being to call myself a brother, and quite possibly my favorite part of that is growing closer with my friends. I have met some of my closest ones, who've become some of my best ones through Kappa Kappa Psi because of our shared love for music.
Kappa Kappa Psi helps college students create a drive in themselves that make them want to become a part of something bigger and "Strive for the Highest." Therefore, since we are all striving for the highest, Kappa Kappa Psi creates some of the best people to walk the earth right?
Some of my best memories come from Kappa Kappa Psi events that my chapter has taken part of, and even though our time in college is short, being an active collegiate brother of Kappa Kappa Psi and the values that teaches is something I will take with me everywhere I go. The fraternity has created bonds with people whom, without music, I might never had met.
In the next upcoming month of April, I am attending my first North Central District Convention in Illinois. Although, I am a little bit nervous, I am way more excited to spend the weekend with my own brothers both from my school and others across our region.
Kappa Kappa Psi will always hold a special place in my heart, and having that connection with someone, even a stranger is one of the coolest feelings in the world. It is pretty neat to be able to bond with someone you have never met in your entire life, but share brotherhood and a love for music with them.
Always "Strive For the Highest,"
AEA.
